J. M. HERNDON.
NAIL EXTRAGTOR.
No. 326,649. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
| gnphor. Wash UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. HERNDON, OF JUDSONIA, ARKANSAS.
NAl L-EXTRACTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,649, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed June 23, 1885.
' enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
My invention has relation to claw-bars and nailextractors; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
.In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the handle bent to an angle of ninety degrees. Fig. 3 is a side view of the straight bar. Fig. 4 is a side view of the shoe or fulcrum. Fig. 5 is a side View of one of the side pieces that form the claws.
My invention is described as follows: I make the barl long enough to be conveniently handled by a grown person, and large enough to bear the pressure of extracting a railroad spike. The lower end of said bar is made flat and. drawn out until it is not thicker than a railroad-spike. On the lower end, and in the lower face of the bar 1, I cut a V-shaped opening, 5, the upper end of which terminates in a three-quarter circular opening, 6, for the reception of the circular head of the fulcrum 4. The head of this fulcrum exactly fits into the opening 6, and enables the fulcrum 4 to freely swing backward and forward, as though it were bolted in said position. The base 7 of the said fulcrum is as wide as the entire grab,
(No model.)
and is provided with a row of teeth, 8, to .prevent its slipping. When this fulcrum is put in place, I then bolt on a pair of the jaws 2, which extend beyond the end of the lever 1 and terminate in a pair of claws. These claws each have on their under face a shoulder, 9, to prevent the fulcrum 4 from swinging too far forward.
The operation of my claw-bar and nail-extractor is apparent. The claws are inserted under the head of the spike or nail. The fulcrum falls forward of its own weight against the shoulder 9. It is then rested 011 some solid substance and I bear down on the bar 1. As the nail or spike is drawn out the claws are allowed, by means of the swinging fulcrum, to move forward and allow the nail to come up in a perpendicular line. Thus it will be seen that the nail is drawn without unnecessary friction, and is not bent by the operation.
Having described my invention, whatIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
The claw-bar and nail-extractor consisting of the lever 1, having in its lower face and at its fulcrum end the V-shaped opening 5 and the three-quarter opening 6, fulcrum 4, having a circular head fitting into the said circular opening 6, base 7, and teeth 8 on the lower face of the said base, side pieces, 2, their front ends terminating in claws and having on their lower face shoulders 9, all bolted together by means of bolts 3, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AS. M. HERNDON.
