, To all whom it may (fnnccrn Be it known that I, ANDREW A. WILSON, of Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sandpaper-Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
My object is to provide an improvement in this class of devices which will be 1n simple and compact form having all of the parts within easy reach of the operator and which will effectively clamp and release the sand paper and enable a used portion to be withdrawn and discarded.
In the drawing I have shown in Figure 1 a perspective view of a sand paper block embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view.
As illustrated the block 1 is of substantially rectangular form and cut .away at its sides as at 2 to provide appropriate grip; ping surface for the operator. At one end of the block and near the top thereof I have shown a storage reel 3 adapted to receive a strip of sand paper 4. This reel is shown mounted in oppositely disposed ears 5 bent from a plate 6 secured to the block. The reel has a handle 7 at one end and on its other end is a ratchet S with which co-acts a pawl 9 fulcrumed on the ear 5 and adapted to hold the reel as against rotation to unwind the paper except when the pawl is positively removed from the ratchet.

To the ends of each bar 12 is secured a pair of arms 14 which extend toward the center of the block, one arm of each pair being on either side of the block. A pin 15 is shown extending transversely through the block at about its central portion and at each end of this pin is keyed a link 16 fulcrumed to the extremities of the adjacent arms 14. are tightly clamping the sand paper, or to be turned to release the link and permit of its manipulation to move the bars away from the block to release the sand paper. The pin 15 is shown in a sleeve 15 to prevent wear.
I have shown the arms 14 tapered and passed through keeper plates 19 secured to the block. The disposition of the links 16 relative to the arms is such that the arms are always maintained off the dead center. As shown in Fig. l the parts are locked and the links 16 may be moved to any desired extent to effect the proper locking. When, however, latch 18 is released and the handle 17 is turned to move the arms and bars outwardly the keeper plates 19 will prevent the arms from reaching a dead center position while at the same time allowing sufiicient release of the paper to permit the used portion to be drawn through and discarded and a new portion fed from the storage reel. After the new portion is supplied and the clamping bars 12 are tightened the handle 7 of the reel may be operated to tighten the roll of sand paper on the reel, the weighted pawl 9 permitting this action. When a new section of paper is to be used the pawl is positively held out of engagement with the ratchet while the paper is being fed. It will be noted that the bars 12 are not secured or attached to the paper. They are simply binding elements capable of firmly holding the paper across the ends of the block. The links by which the extremities of the arms are united insure uniform action of the arms and bars and the latching device tends to hold the bars in tight clamping engagement with the paper.
I claim as my invention:
1. As an article of manufacture, a sand paper block having a storage reel at one end and trans erse recesses formed in its end walls, bars, in said recesses adapted to engage the paper from said. reel fed between them and said block a pair of mus extending from each of said bars toward the center of the block, one arm of each pair on either side of the block, links connecting the adjacent arms, a handle on one of said links, and a latch to lock said link.
2. As an article of manufacture, a sand paper block having a storage reel at one end, bars extending transversely of said block at each of its ends and adapted to engage the paper from said reel fed between them and said block, means for maintaining said bars in position, a pair of arms extending from each of said bars toward the center of said block, one arm of each pair on either side of the block, a pin extending transversely through said block, a link at each end of said pin fulcru ned to the adjacent arms, a handle on one of said links, and a latchto lock' said link.
3. As. an article of manufacture, a sand paper block having bars extending transversely of each of its ends adapted to clamp the paper applied-to the block, keeper plates secured to the sides of said'block, a pair of tapering arms extending from the ends of said bars toward the center of the block and passed through said keeper plates, links connecting the adjacent arms, one of said having a handle, and a latch to lock said In testimony whereof I have signed this specification.
