` "Thisinvention relates to a sander tool an especially to the hand type of tool.
The primary purpose of this invention is to provide in a sander tool locking means which quickly and eiiciently locks sandpaper to'the working surface of the tool, and the locking means also readily releases the sandpaper from its locked position on the tool thus permitting the sandpaper to be quickly removed from the tool.
Heretofore many users of sandpaper merely held the sandpaper in their hand when using the None of andpaper from l5 It is an object of this invention to provide a 5sander tool which can be held conveniently in `the hand and used without'injury to the hand of the operator. 20
. It is another object oithis invention to provide means at the opposite ends of a sander tool 'for temporarily securing sandpaper tothe working face of the tool. l
It is another object of this invention t0 provide in a sander tool, locking means for securling sandpaper on the tool and which locking means is mounted inside the body of the tool.
Other and further objects of the invention reside in the detailed construction of the tooll which is designed for simplicity and eflicien'cy. a
In the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which `forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in-all views of the drawingsandthroughthe .3135
sander tool disclosing a sheet of sandpaper secured tothe tool.
Figure 2 is a top plan view, parts' broken away, of the sandertool. Y r
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational View of the sander tool, parts broken away, and with parts in section. Y
Figure 4, front elevational view o tool. n
Figure 5 is a plan view of the sheet of sandpaper used with the tool.
The improved sander tool I0 consists of a body S50 of wood I2 generally rectangular in shape. The present tool IIJ is approximately 5 inches in length, 21A; inches in width and 1%/2 inches in height, and a tool of such dimensions is easily lMi) Y T45 f the sander grasped in the hand of an operator for con--55 venient use by the operator, but any other desired dimensions may be employed. The lower face or bottom I4 of the tool is flat with a thickness of sponge rubber I4 glued thereto which functions as a pad for the sandpaper I8 mounted over the sponge rubber I6.
A narrow slot 24 is formed in the rear end 3| of the tool I0 and extends from side 28 to side 30. Ari-arcuate groove portion 32 is formed in the top side of slot 24 and extends from side 28 to side of body I0 while a second arcuate groove portion 34 is formed in the bottom side of rthe slot 2-4 opposite and coincident with the groove portion 32. An end portion 20 of the she'et of sandpaper I8 extends into the slot 24 and a nail 25 or any other appropriate pointed device is mounted in the arcuate groove 32 in the top of slot 24 and abuts the top side of the end portion 20 of the sheet of sandpaper I8 thus wedging Ythat portion of the end portion 20 of the sheet of sandpaper I8 opposite the shank of the nail 25 into the arcuate groove 34 in the bottom of slot 24 thus wedging or rmly holding the end :roller is formed with a narrow slit 42 and 44 in the ends'respectively of the roller 4'0 with the lslits 42 and 44 extending diametrically through 'the `roller and also extending to a central core 'portion 45 of the roller 40. Oppositely disposed arcurate groove portions similar to lgroove portions 32-'-34 in slot 24 are formed inthe roller 40 extending kfrom .the outerend of slit -42 through core 45 to 'the outer' end of slit 44. A nail 4I is ,carried in 4these vgrooves'for apurpose to be set `forth hereinafter. A handle 46 square shaped in cross-section is mounted in an aperture extending through the central portion 45 of roller 4I). The
.handle 46 is provided with a slot 4'I adjacent its -Y lower end which is for a purpose set forth here- Vinafter. videdwith an approximately 45 degree tapered The outer end of the handle 46 is proportion 48 Vfor aV purpose hereinafter set forth. AA groove 50 formed in the top 33 and front end 29 of the body I2vcommunicates with the tubular opening36 :and the slotl 38 in the front end 29 of 'the bodyiI2'. The rear wall 52 of the groove 50 tapers :downwardly from the top 33 of the body when .the handle 46 movedto'the rightyisee I2 to the front end 29 of tool I0. The end 22 of the sheet of sandpaper I8 is notched at 23 providing tab portions 25 and 21.
When the handle 46 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction the roller 40 is moved to the left until the slits 42 and 44 register with the slot 38 in the front end 29 of the body I2 of sander tool I0, then the tabs 25 and 21 of the sheet of sandpaper I 8 can be inserted into the slits 42 and 44 of roller 4Il'withkv sides of notch 23abutting the sides ofthe core vportion 45 ofthe roll'er'4' The nail 4I is inserted in one of the oppositely disposed arcuate grooves in the slit 42 in the rollerof groove 50 in the top 33 of the body 'I2 ofthe-t v sander tool I0. Then the handle 46 is pushed toward the front 29 ofthe body I2 untilthe -outer end of the handle Mengagesthat portionvof-the bottom wall 52 of the groovev50 positioned on the :front side-of roller 40 (see Figures-2, 3 and 4) to prevent the roller 40 moving in a counter-clockwise direction for involuntarily releasing the sheetl of fsandpaper I8 when the tool I0 is lbeing used'for sandingan article of furniture-etc. The
nail 4I- eXtends through the slotv 41 in handle 46 the -roller 40 is in the position shown in Figure l ofi-:the drawings thefend 22 VofZ the sheet of sandpaperz'IS is .wedged tightly'between a portion of the. wall olfA the Atubular bore 36 and the outer sursandpaper witn- 4 like. If a length of either buff or cloth should be used with the body I 2, then the ends of the cloth would need to be appropriately reinforced or stiffened so that these ends could be conveniently inserted in the slot 24 in the rear end 3| of body I2 and into the slits 42 and 44 in the roller 40 mounted in the bore 36 adjacent the front end of the body I2.
It is contemplated to use diierent grades of the tool forvdierent types of work.
As can be readily seen, it is easy to secure and remove sandpaper or cloth on the bottom I4 of thetool I0.
Wood is the preferred material for the body of th'etool, but the invention is not limited to this particular material as the body of the tool could be formed of either any suitable metallic or nonmetallic imaterial.
While a specific form of the improvement has beenrdescribed and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied as to size and shape and diierent arrangements of,l the elements of the tool and such changes are deemed to come Vwithin the scope of the appended claims without departing-'from the spirit of the invention.
