(o1. `51-1s*1) Thisginvention relates to `sanding blocks, `that is, devices forholding extendedforuse a` portion olf `sheet-like 4abrasive material such as sandpalper, iemery cloth or the like. The name sandingblock is due to the fact that the prototype of such a device is in Vfanta solid block of wood `to ,which a workman tacks apiece of sandpaper. The presentdevice, on the contrary, is in the .nature of a permanentappliance or tool formed of sheet metal and in the `preferred form herein illustrated4 comprises` essentially but two unitary sheetmetal pieces whereby there is most effectively attained the ob-ject of the invention to provide a simple andinexpensive` construction, nevertheless vdurable and convenientand efficient to use. ,In one aspect of the present invention it may beconsidered as an improvement on the de- ANice shown in my application Serial No. 319,376, iiled Feb. 17, 1940, wherein certain generic features are claimed.
My invention will be well understood by reifterence to the following description of the illustrative embodiment thereof shown by way offeX- 4ample inthe accompanying drawing, wherein:

The cooperating member which is in the nature of a cover isalso of a general channel form and comprises a web 22 from which extend longitudinally depending flanges 24 which may have nger-receiving grooves 26 along their sides. The depth of these flanges is such that when the two members are assembled, as in Figs. 1 and 3,

Herein I have shown the strip l2 as a portion dispensed from a roll 34 which may be received in the compartment formed at the left-hand of the partition 2D, viewing Fig. 2. The end of this strip may be threaded once for all through the joint of the hinge at the left, and when the parts are opened the worn part of the strip may be torn off and a new length drawn out through the joint until its end will reach the right-hand end of lthe device in some such position as is shown in Fig. 2. One of the flanges 24 may be provided with a sight opening 36 `(Fig. l) opening to the compartment referred t so that one may see how much of the roll hasV been used up.
The flange 30 may be provided with an opening 38 in such a position that in the closed position of the parts it lies just above the top of the cooperating flange I4. This opening provides for the insertion of a prying instrument to separate the parts. shown a suitable prying instrument permanently mounted as an accessoryrof the device asA aY whole, and for this purpose I may provide a lever having the relatively offset, generally parallel portions 4l] and 42 connected by a web 44 which is received in a narrow slot 46 formed inithe top 22 of the cover member. The part 42 vextends outwardly through the aperture 38 and terminally overlies the upper rolled end I6 of the flange I4 While the part 40 lies fiat on the top 22 whichV may have an opening 48 cut therethrough to admit the nger to engage the lower surface of the part 40, permitting it to be rocked clockwise in the figure so that the end 42 will press downwardly on the part IS to separate the parts. To provide for the assembly of the prying lever slits may be cut from the slot 44 to provide a tongue D which initially may take the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 providing a relatively large opening permitting the cranked prying lever to be assembled with the end 42 extended through the opening 4B. The tongue may then be closed back into the plane of the top 22 and the lever will be irremovably suspended in the slot 46. It will be noted that in rocking the lever clockwise, viewing Fig. 2, the fulcrum is and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive; reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
I claim:
l. A sanding block comprising a bottom member having end flanges upwardly turned and terminally rolled and a cover member having side flanges of an area substantially corresponding to the space l,between the flanges and web of the bottom member and having end flanges between said side flanges, which end flanges are concaved to lit the rolled portions, the side anges having instruck tongues entering one of the rolled terminals to provide a pivot, the end flange of the lid member at the opposite end having a yielding-extension below the concaved portion providing a guide for engaging the two members together with a snap action.
Herein I have 2. A sanding block comprising a bottom meniber having upwardly turned end flanges and a cover member having side ilanges to extend between said end flanges and of a depth to extend to the web of the bottom member to define a boxlike enclosure and also having end anges, the end flanges of the members being cooperatively proled to provide for a snap engagement thereof to retain the two members together and providing for the clamping of the ends of an abrasive strip therebetween, one end flange having an opening at a location corresponding substantially to the edge of the cooperating flange when the members are engaged, said opening providing access for a pry to separate the members.
3. A sanding block comprising essentially two sheet metal pieces, one comprising a base having upwardly turned end flanges and side flanges extending along the base and the end anges and the other comprising a -top having yieldable end iianges to telescope into snap-acting engagement with the end flanges rst mentioned, said other member having side flanges independent of said end flanges of a depth to reach substantially to said base and terminally extended to overlie the engaged pairs of end lianges.

In a structure of the class described comprising two sheet metal members telescoped to forma box-like structure with overlapping, mutually gripping walls corresponding to at least a part of the periphery thereof, one wall having an aperture adjacent the edge of the overlapping Wall, a relatively perpendicular face of the structure having a slot, and an opener device having generally parallel offset ends connected by a web which is received in said slot, one end extending through the aperture to oppose said edge of the overlapping wall and the other end normally overlying said face.
5. A sanding block comprising a bottom member having end anges upwardly turned and terminally rolled and a cover member having side flanges of an area substantially corresponding to the space between thev flanges and web of the bottom member, means for engaging said side flanges with one of said end flanges to provide a hinge joint presenting a passage through which a trip may be threaded over the said one end flange, the other end of the cover member having a depending portion to oppose the other end flange, the said Vportion and other end flange being cooperatively profiled to provide for a snap engagement thereof to retain the two members together and providing for the clamping' of the ends of an abrasive strip therebetween.
6. A sanding block comprising a bottom member having upwardly turned end flanges and a cover member having side ilanges to extend between saidend flanges and of a depth to extend to the web of the bottom member to dene a boxlike enclosure and also having end ilanges, the end flanges of the members being cooperatively profiled to provide for a snap engagement thereof to retain the two members together and providing for the 'clamping of the ends of an abrasive strip therebetween, the several end flanges being received in the closed position of the parts entirely between said side flanges of the cover.
