OLE C. MILLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SANZDPAPER-HOLDER.
Spetification of Iietters Patent.
. Patented Apr. 23, 191%.
Application filed February 3, 1912. Serial No. 675,266.
'to provide a simple andeflicient, clamp for securing the paper to .a base block, the
' clamp being constructed so as to permit the from the base block.
paper to be readily attached to or removed With the hereinstatedobjectin view, the
invention consists in a novel constructionand arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a- -perspective view of the holder; Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross section, and Fig. 4 a plan vlew showing a modification.
Referring specifically to thedrawing, 5
denotes a base block over the-bottom of which the sheet 6 of sand or emery-paper is stretched and held by the clamp to be presently described. The block is rectangular and its back is faced with a layer 7 of cork.
The clamp comprises a flat sheet-metal plate 8, having hinged to one of its longitudinal edges, as indicated at 9, a jaw member which is in two sections 10 and 11, respectively, said sections being connected by a hinge joint 12 and having thc same length as the plate 8. The sections are adapted to be folded together flat between the plate 8 and the back of the block 5, with the section 10 next to the plate and the section-l1 next to the block as clearly shown in Fig.
'2. The section 11 is the 'aw proper,';it having' a lateral bend 13 at its free edge which extends downward along thes'ide of the block when in clamping position and ;termi-' nates in an inward bend 14, adapted to grip the paper. The other edge of theplate 8. .has a fixed jaw member 13 similar- Ito the part 13 and terminating in an inward-fi d 14: to grip pape In operation, the paper-6 is placed on the bottom of the block 5 and bent up so as to overlap the sides thereof. The aw" memhere 10 and 11 are then partly folded beneath the plate 8 so that .when the clam is applied to the back of the block, the aw comprisin 13 extends over one side thereof, the jaw 13 being positioned so as-to extend over the other side. The plate 8 is now pressed down',,whereupon the jaws are drawn inward and the bends 14 and 1.4 are caused to firmly grip the paper and clamp it against the sides of the block, the action being similar to a toggle. To remove the paper it is necessary only to pull the plate 8 upward from the block, which spreads the jaws and releases the'same from the paper. The jaw 13 has an aperture 15 to. provide a finger hold for the purpose of pulling said jaw down on the side of the block.
Out of the plate 8 are punchedtongues 16 which engage the back of the block when the clamp is in looking position.
Fig. 3 shows a slightly modified structure,
the jaws l7 and 18 extending in a curve from the plate 8 which adapts the device for different shaped and sized blocks.
The modified form of'clamp is applied i to and removed from the block in the same manner as the one already described.
I claim 1. A holder comprising abase block, and a clamp associated therewith, said clamp comprising a plate havin its edges, and a jaw at- 1ts opposite edge,
between which jaws the block is received,
the second mentioned jaw being hinged to theplate and'comprising two hingedly con nected sections which are foldable upon themselves between the plate and the block,
and one of said sections having a gripping portion.
2. A. holder comprising a base block,-and aclamp associated therewith, said clamp a plate adapted to be placed on the ,bac of-the block and having tongues a jaw at one of engageable therewith, and said plate having jaws at its opposite edges between which.
the block is located, one of said jaws being hinged to the plate and ;comprising two hingedly connected sections which are foldable upon themselves between the plate and the block, and onset said sections having a' gri ping portion. n testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
