Description

BRUSH HOLDER Filed July 22, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet l if 0 ee [nvenlor A llomey Patented June 2, 1936 UNITED STATES BRUSH HOLDER Louis Dry, New York, N. Y., assignor of one-half to Derso Osontos, New York, N. Y.
Application July 22, 1935, Serial No. 32,603
2 Claims. (Cl. 111) This invention relates to the art of brushing and scrubbing and has more particular reference to a brush holder.
In accordance with the present invention an adjustable brush holder is provided for accommodating various sizes of brushes.
Further, in accordance with the present invention, the brush holder is equipped with means for the ready and detachable connection therewith 1 of a squeegee whereby the latter may be used whether or not a brush is secured within the holder.
Further, in accordance with the present invention, the brush holder is provided with a scraper 15 which can also be used whether or not either a brush or squeegee or both are engaged with the brush holder.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view with the squeegee removed.
Figures 3, 4 and 7 are detail sectional views taken substantially on the lines 33, 4-4 and l--l respectively of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the squeegee. Figure 6 is a perspective view of a scraper blade.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the adjustable brush holder.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the brush holder comprises a pair of complemental sections 5 and 6, and each of these sections includes a main sheet metal body portion 7, one end of which is bent down to form a flange 8 provided with an inturned edge 9 to provide a clamping jaw.
One of said members, for example the member 5, has its main body portion 1 provided at relatively opposite side edges thereof with inturned flanges I9 forming internal guides in which are slidably accommodated the corresponding edge portion of the body I of member 6 as clearly shown in Figure 4.
A handle receiving socket I I formed of metal or other suitable material is provided with an integral attaching flange l2 riveted or otherwise secured to the main body portion 1 of the memher 5 as at I3.
A metal strap I4 has one end bent down to form an attaching flange riveted or otherwise secured 5 to the flange 8 of the member 5 as at IS. The
strap I4 is disposed at an incline across the body 1 of the member 6 so as to accommodate the body 7 of the member 5, and the free end of the strap I4 is upturned as at [4a to rest on the socket H as is shown in Figure 3.
For securing the handle l6 within the socket 5 H, and the members 5 and 6 at the desired adjustment there is provided a bolt I! that extends transversely through the socket H and the handle I 6 as shown in Figure 3 and this bolt also extends through an elongated slot l8 formed in the 10 end portion I ia of the strap I4. On the free end of the bolt I7 is a lock washer l9 and a thumb nut 20.
As shown in Figure 3 the head Zla of the brush 2!] is accommodated within the brush holder in a manner clearly shown in Figure 3 and is clamped Within the holder through the medium of the jaws 9. When the sections 5 and 6 of the holder have been properly adjusted for securing the brush head engaged therewith, said sections 20 are secured in final adjustment by screwing home the nut 20 as is thought apparent.
The flange 8 of the member 6 has its respective opposite ends reduced and reversely bent as at 22 to provide resilient clips cooperable with the clip 23 in which is secured in any suitable manner a squeegee 24 for detachably connecting the squeegee with the brush holder. In this connection it will be noted that the clip 23 for the squeegee 24 is substantially U-shaped in cross section to provide opposed portions between the free edges of which is secured the squeegee 24. These opposed portions have one side of the longitudinal center of the clip and at the closed end of the clip are bent at substantial right angles to the free edges of the clip to provide an attaching flange 23a which engages with the clips 23 in a manner best suggested in Figure 1 for securing the squeegee to the brush holder in such a manner that the squeegee may be used without necessitating the removal of the brush 2| from the holder.
Further in accordance with the present invention there is provided a scraper blade 25 that is pivoted at one end as at 26 to the strap l4. Adjacent its sharpened or beveled edge 25a the scraper 25 has a portion struck out therefrom to provide a finger piece or lug 21 to facilitate the swinging of the scraper blade in the direction indicated by the arrows in Figure 1 for placing the blade into or out of operative position. As clearly shown in Figure 1, when the blade 25 is swung outwardly to the dotted line position for use, the working edge 25a of the blade will project beyond the squeegee 24, so that, as is apparent, the blade may be used without necessitating a removal of the squeegee or brush from the holder.
Also, and as best shown in Figure 3, when the blade 25 is swung to the full line position which is the out-of-the-way or inoperative position for the blade, the working edge portion 25a will bear against the angularly offset end Ma of the strap [4 with. the result that this blade 25 will then be placed under sufiicient tension serving to frictionally retain the blade 25 in this out-of-the-way or inoperative position.
To insure a positive retention in the inoperative or out-of-the-way position shown in full lines in Figures 1- and '3, the washer I9 has opposite side edges thereof squared as best shown in Figure 1 and indicated at I911. Obviously, with either squared edge [9a of the washer brought into engagement with the edge 25a of the blade 25 said blade will be positively held in the full line position shown in Figure 1 against being casually loosened.
As shown in Figures 3 and '7, the socket II is slit longitudinally and has the edge portions thereof formed by the slit arranged in overlapping position, and one of the said edges is extended longitudinally and reversely bent upon itself to provide a hook 28 which is engageable with the jaw 9 of the member and is clenched into engagement with said jawthereby supplementing the attaching flange l2 to provide a rigid connection between the socket and the member 5.
As best shown in Figure '7 the end Ma of strap I4 is transversely curved having its convex side presented upwardly, and being thus curved the side edges of the end Ma will not interfere with the sliding movement of the blade 25 into the out-of-the-way or inoperative position occupied by the blade as shown when the latter is not in use.
or the blade 25 From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided an efiicient adjustable brush holder which serves as a holder not only for a brush but also for a squeegee and a scraper blade providing for a convenient arrangement of these cleaning elements to the end that any desired one of the elements may be brought into use without requiring a removal of either of the other of the elements.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: V
1. A brush holder, a handle receiving socket secured to the brush holder, a scraper blade pivoted at one end to the brush holder so as to swing with its scraper edge beyond the holder and adapted to be swung into engagement against the socket to bear against the socket in a'manner to place said blade under bending stress for frictionally retaining the blade in an out-of-the-way position.
' 2. A brush holder comprising a pair of rectangular complemental members each including a sheet metal plate having at one edge a flange provided with an inturned edge forming a clamping jaw, said clamping jaws being in opposed relation, said plates being arranged in overlapping sliding relation, and one of said plates having at the ends thereof inturned flanges forming guides slidably receiving the corresponding edges of the other of said plates for slidably retaining said plates together, a handle socket secured to said one plate, and a strap member secured at one end to the other plate and extending across the plate, said strap member having a free end overlying and substantially paralleling said socket, and provided with a longitudinal slot, and a bolt extending through said socket and slot and equipped with a nut for securing said plates at the desired adjustment.
