1 Claim. (Cl. 15-236) The present invention relates to a device for attachment to a handle of a broom, shovel or the like.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a device for attachment with a handle and provide with a plate that may be provided with a sharp edge.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a slot for the reception of a blade or plate.

A still further object of the present invention is' the provision of means for locking a plate or blade in a slot.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means for clamping the device to a handle.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means for protecting the sharp edge of a blade or plate.

A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means for offsetting the device from a handle.

With these and other object in view the advantages of the present invention will become more fully apparent as reference is made to the accompanying drawing, wherein;

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention and illustrating the clamp means and the guard means for protecting the edge of a blade or plate.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of Figure 1 and illustrating the arm carrying a blade or plate as being oiset from the clamping means, the dotted lines showing the guard for the edge of a blade or plate out of engagement.

Figure 3 is a partial exploded view of the device shown in Figure l, a portion being shown fragmentarily.

Figure 4 is a sectional View in elevation taken on line 4-4 of Figure l, the dotted lines representing curved wall clamping means and a handle.

Figure 5 is a view per se of the locking means for blades or plates.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 20 represents a bar including a head carrying portion 21 and an attaching portion 22, the latter being odset with respect to the head carrying portion and integrally connected thereto by the connecting portion 23.

The head carrying portion 21 is provided with an integral cross element 24 that is provided with a groove 25 and an elongated solid portion 26 that is a part of the head carrying portion 21 as shown in Figure 2. The groove 25 receives the cut out portion 27 of a blade or plate 28, the edges 29 and longitudinal edge 30 snugly engaging the edges 31 and the longitudinal edge 32 of the solid portion 26. The ends of the cross element 24 are each provided with a V-shaped cut out portion 33, and likewise the blade or plate 28 is provided with companion cut out portions' 34. As shown in Figures l and 2 the blade or plate 28 is locked in the groove 25 by a spring element 35, the ends 36 being looped to give additional locking tension, the ends 36 engaging the V-shaped cut out portion 33.

On one face 37 of the carrying portion 21 there is mounted an arm 38 having a portion of one end formed into a loop 39, the opposite end 40 being bent downwardly and being secured to a guard 41, the guard having inwardly disposed side edges 42 and an inturned edge 43 along one of its longitudinal edges, the inturned edge forming a recess 44 for engagement with the edge 45 of the blade or plate 28. As shown in Figures 1' and 2, the guard 41 is in engagement with the edge 45 of the blade or plate 28, and it is held in engagement with or disengagement from the blade or plate 28 by thumb-screw 46 that is received in a threaded bore in the face 37, the loop 39 being under tension of spring 47, one end of the spring bearing against a washer 48 that bears against the loop 39. Under the tension of spring 47 the arm may be moved forward for disengagement of the guard 41 from the blade or plate as shown by the dotted lines 49 in Figure 2 and it will be held in suspended position while the blade or plate is being used.

The attaching portion 22 is provided with loops 50 having the longitudinal portions 51 in spaced relation from the side faces of the attaching portion 22 forming openings 52 that receive clamping fingers 53 and 54. Finger 53 is provided at one end with an inturned flange 55, Finger 54 is provided at one end with a threaded bore that is engaged by the threaded shank 57 of wing bolt 58, the end of the threaded shank 57 impinging against the inner face of the finger 53 and the peripheral edge of the threaded shank against the inner wall of the ange when in locked postion, the end 59 being disposed inwardly.

In using the device as shown in Figures l and 2, the wing bolt 58 is unscrewed, allowing the clamping fingers to open freely. A handle 60 is then inserted between the fingers. The handle may be a broom handle, a brush handle or a handle per se. The wing bolt 58 is tightened until the lingers 53 and 54 firmly grip the handle. During the tightening operation the ange 55 serves to hold the threaded shank in a substantially horizontal position, the inner faces of the loops serving as abutment against which the lingers impinge. By offsetting portion 21 from the portion 22, when the device is used with a broom, brush or mop as a scraper, the scraper blade is out of the way of the hands of the user. The guard 41 protects the edge of a blade or plate, preventing the user from cutting his hands. The device when used with a broom, brush or mop is useful around public places, such as theaters, the scraper being used to remove chewing gum and other matter that may be stuck to a oor or walks prior to or while sweeping. From the drawings it can be seen that by providing the Vshaped cut out portions 33 in the head 24 and the V-shaped cut out portions in the blade or plate, a positive lock is provided for the blade or plate when positioned in the head 24. The cut out portion 27 in the blade or plate when in engagement with the solid portion 26 of the head provides a rigid structure, and one in which the blade is firmly secured to the head 24. To self balance the guard 41 it is merely necessary to regulate tension on spring 47 by the thumb screw 46.

I wish to have it understood that various changes, modications and variations may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention and the claim hereto appended.

What is claimed is:
