HARNESS-BUCKLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 22, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LELAND L. BoUNDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved harness buckle, more especially designed for use on a saddle girth and arranged to permit a rider to conveniently pull the saddle girth tighter without dismounting, and to prevent the buckle from opening accidentally, thus rendering the buckle absolutely safe.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is.
represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The back plate or frame A of the buckle is provided at one end with a slot B and a cross bar 0, to which is attached one end of a saddle girth D, the free end D of which is adapted to pass through a slot E and under a cross bar F arranged on the otherend of the bed plate A. The free, serrated end G of a lever G, extends into the slot E and engages the under side of the free end D, so as to press the same against the cross bar F, to securely clamp the free end D in position on the buckle. The lever G is fulcrumed at or near its middle at G in the sides A of the bed plate A, and the lower end of the lever G is pressed on by a spring H engagin recesses in the bed plate A and the lever respectively, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The springl-I presses the lower end of the lever G outward, so as to swing the free end G of the lever G in firm engagement with the free end D of the saddle girth, but when a pull is exerted in an upward direction on the terminal of the end D with a view to draw the saddle girth tighter, then the lever G yields to allow the passage of the end D through the slot E,
and when the pull is released the lever G automatically clamps the end in place against the cross bar F. Thus the rider can conveniently reach down and take hold of the terminal of the end D and pull upward on the same with a view to draw the saddle girth tighter, without dismounting.
Over the lever G extends a hood I integrally connected with the sides A of the bed plate A, the hood being open at both ends so as to allow free swinging of the lever under the hood and at the same time to permit the user to conveniently reach and press the lower end of the lever G when it is desired to release or unbuckle the saddle girth. A loop J is attached to or formed on the outside of the hood I for the passage of the terminal of the end D, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.
By the arrangement described the lever G is well protected against accidental opening, and hence the harness buckle is rendered exceedingly safe and reliable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A harness buckle, comprising a back plate arranged for connection at one end with a harness strap, the other end having a slot and a cross bar, a spring-pressed lever fulcrumed and ranging lengthwise of the said back plate, the said lever having its free end extending into the said slot for clamping the free end of the harness strap against the said cross bar, and a hood on the said back plate and extending over the said lever to protect the same.
2. A harness buckle, comprising a back plate arranged for connection at one end with a harness strap, the other end having a slot and a cross bar, a spring-pressed lever fulcrumed and ranging lengthwise of the said back plate, the said lever having its free end extending into the said slot for clamping the free end of the harness strap against the said cross bar, and a hood on the said back plate and extending over the said lever to protect the same, the hood being open at the ends.
3. A harness buckle, comprising a back plate arranged for connection at one end with a harness strap, the other end having a slot and a cross bar, a spring-pressed lever fulcrumed and ranging lengthwise of the said back plate, the said lever having its free end extending into the said slot for elarnping the In testimony whereof I have signed free end of the harness strap against the said name to this specification in the presence of cross bar, a hood on the said back plate and two subscribing Witnesses. 7 extending over the said lever to protect the LELAND L.
