UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. A
GEORGE S. HENSEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HENSEL-COLLADAY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
SKIRT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,687, dated October '7, 1902.
Application filed August 26, 1902. Serial No. 121,109. (No model.)
To (0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. HENSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a skirt-protector composed of a facing of waterproof material, a head of fabric and a brush pendent therefrom, and a strengthening-rib at the place of junction of said head and fabric, said facing guarding said head and being flush With said rib, so as to prevent the latter from projecting beyond said facing, so that the wearing qualities of the device are increased, while the facing contiguous or adjacent to said rib is reinforced and prevented from unraveling.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a piece of skirt-protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on linemw, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a skirt-protector, which is composed of the facing 13, the head 0, the brush D, and the longitudinally-extending rib E.
The facing B consists of a piece of Waterproof material. The head 0 consists of a woven fabric, and the brush is part of said fabric and depends from said head. The rib E is woven with said head and brush at the place of junction of said head and brush, thus forming a strong article.
The lower edge portion of the facing B is turned up, forming the fold F, which is laid upon the head C, making two thicknesses of the facing, which are sewed or otherwise secured to said head. It thus reinforces the facing, while the bottom of the facing is prevented from unraveling. Furthermore, said lower edge portion of the facing is flush with said rib, so that the latter does not project beyond said facing, whereby said rib is protected against severewear, and thus the life of the protector is increased. Again, the bend at the bottom of the facing, due to the turning up of the lower edge portion thereof, strengthens said bottom and prevents unraveling of the fabric of the facing.
As the facing is composed of waterproof material, it is to be secured to the skirt or garment. IVhile the brush may absorb water, the latter will not reach said garment, as it will be stopped by said facing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A skirt-protector consisting of a facing of waterproof material,a head with which the same is connected, a brush pendent from said head, and a longitudinally-extending and outwardly-projecting rib intermediate of said head and brush, the lower portion of said facing being flush with said rib.
2. In a skirt-protector, a brush, a longitudinally-extending and outwardly-projecting rib above the same, a head rising from said brush, and a facing-piece of waterproof material, the lower portion of which has a reinforce fold thereon, the same being upturned from said piece and havingits bend adjacent to said rib, the lower portion of said facingpiece resting against said head.
3. A skirt-protector, a head, a brush pendent therefrom, a longitndinally-extending and outwardly-projectingrib intermediate of said head and brush, and afacing-piece of waterproof material with which said head is connected, the lower portion of said piece having an upturned fold, the'bend of the same is adjacent to said rib.
