- M. D. BEACH.
WATERPROOF GARMENT. No. 570,081. Patented Oct. 27, 1896.
F i/g l 3 IQNVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILO D. BEACH, OF LITCHFIELD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF I TO HENRY J. I'IENDEY, OF TCRRINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
WATERPROOF GARM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,081, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed July 30, 1896. Serial No. 601,033. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILO D. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Litchfield, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vaterproof Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive waterproof garment adapted for use by either men or women,
I 5 which shall be so constructed as to prevent water from running through the opening at the front so as to wet the clothing of the wearer when sitting in the rain, which will require the least possible amount of material in its construction, and which will be convenient to fasten and unfasten.
\Vith these ends in view I have devised the novel waterproof garment of which the following description, in connection with the ac- 2 5 companying drawings, is a specification, letters and numbers being used to designate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of my invention to awaterproof garment,
the edges being in the closed position as in use; Fig. 2, a similar view, the edges being unfastened; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating a modified form of my invention Fig. 4, a detail view, 011 an enlarged scale,
3 5 showing the manner in which the edges meet at the angle; and Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the supplemental fly which prevents water from blowing into the opening when the wearer is standing or walking. 7
A denotes the front section of my novel garment, B the side, and C the shoulder sec tion. The special system by which these parts are formed and put together is not of the essence of my invention.
D indicates an opening in the front of the garment which commences at the front of the neck and extends obliquely in either a straight or curved line toward the side of the garment, where it intersects with an opening E, the
latter extending from the point of intersection to the bottom of the garment.
a indicates the oblique portion of the edge of section A, and a the straight portion of the edge of section A; b, the edge of the side, and c the edge of the shoulder section. The edges may be fastened in any ordinary or preferred manner. I have shown the edges as fastened by means of hollow buttons 1, which are adapted to slip over studs 2 on the other part.- In Figs. 1, 2, and 4 I have shown the edge e of section 0 as overlapping the edge a of section A and as secured directly to it. At the point where section 0 intersects with side B, I have shown a vertical cut 3. Under these parts I place a reinforce 4, (see dotted lines, Fig. 4,) the portion of the reinforce within the inner dotted line, which I have indicated by '7, being left unattached, so as to form a pocket to receive the angle of section A, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 4 in connection with Fig. 1.
5 denotes an outwardly-extending fly which I preferably place near the edge I) of side B. When the garment is fastened, as in Fig. 1, this fly is wholly under the edge a of section A. The function of the fly is to render it practically impossible for any water to blow into opening E when the wearer is standing or walking.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a form in which the edge 0 of section C instead of passing over the edge a of section A, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, passes under the said edge a and is provided with a fly 6, to which the buttons are attached, and which itself overlaps edge a, edge a in this form lying between edge 0 and fly 6. If preferred, a fly 6 may be placed upon the edge a of section A, the edge I) of side B overlapping the edge a, but lying under the fly. This being such an obvious modi- 9o fication in view of Fig. 3, in which the fly is shown in connection with the oblique opening, is not thought to require illustration.
It will be readily understood that when the garment is buttoned the edge 0 of section C overlaps the edge a of section A, and that the edge a of section A overlaps the side B, thus insuring that when the wearer is sitting in the rain, as when driving, it will be practically impossible for rain to pass in at either opening D or opening E, and furthermore that when the wearer is standing orwalking the fly 5 will prevent the possibility of water being driven in at opening E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A waterproof garment having an opening the upper portion of which extends from the front of the neck to a point at one side of the body of the garment, and the lower portion extending from the said point down to the bottom of the garment, the edges of the upper portion of said opening being provided with fastening means to hold the upper edge overlapped upon the lower edge, and the edges of the lower portion of said opening being provided with fastening means to hold the front edge overlapped upon the rear edge, whereby water moving downward and rearward is prevented from entering the openings.
2. A waterproof garm ent comprising atrout section A, a side B anda sl1ouldcrsectio11 O, and having an opening between sections 0 and A commencing at the front of the neck and extending obliquely toward the side where it intersects with an opening between section A and the side, the edge 0 of section C overlapping the edge a of section A and the edge a of section A overlapping the edge I) of the side, edge I) being provided with an outwardly-extending fly 5 which in the fastened position is covered by edge a and prevents water from blowing into the opening when the wearer is sitting in the rain.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILO D. BEACH. \Vitnesses:
