IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR PANTALOONS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.:
Be it known that I, ISAAC STRATTON, of Keene, Cheshire county, New Hampshire, haveinventeda newand useful Improvement in Fastening for the Fly-Fronts of Pantaloons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ther'eof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccication, in which- Figure 1 represents my improved elastic iiy-front fastening applied to a pair of pantaloons, showingit when opened.
Figure 2 is an inside view of the same, with the fronts opened.
Figure 3, a similar view, withthe fronts closed.

This invention consists in a device for fastening the lower part of the y-t'ronts of mens and boys pantaloons, instead of employing buttons for the purpose, and is intended especially for the convenience of aged and other infirm persons, whose fingers are disabled or crippled, and cannot button and uubutton with facility, and also for boys. b
This improved-device for fastening the iiy-i'ronts of pantaloons is formed by attaching a set of eyelet-holes in both aps or fronts, in the place of buttons and button-holes at the lower part, in which eyelet-holes is strung au elastic cord or braid, in such manner that it draws the y-fronts together of itself, and keeps them snug, and
even, ordinarily, as though they werebuttoned together, while at the same time the cord may be easily put aside and the y-fronts `or flaps be opened by merely inserting the ends of the fingers between the fronts, and bearing upon the cord, as required.
By this means the aged and infirm, or men with crippled hands, are enabled to serve themselves in calls ot' nature without difficulty, while at the same time the fastening is self-closing, and avoids exposure commonly attending neglect to fasten the fronts by buttoning them up.
In the drawings, A represents a pair of pantaloons, with the lower front or flap having two or more single eyelets, a, and the upper iiy-front having two or more pairs oi' corresponding eyelets, Zz, side by side, in place of tholower buttons. An elastic cord, c, is sewed fast at one end to the binding, vat the lower part or junction of the ity-fronts, about two inches below the place of the lower button, as shown elearlyin figs. 2 and 3. The cord is passed through the lower single eyelet a from the back side, and thence through the lower one of the lower pair of eyelets returning through the other eyelet of the pair back to the same single oyelet a, thence passing to the next single eyclet a, above and through it to and through the next pair of eyelets IJ, as before, and back to the second single eyelet, and thence upward on the'under side ofthe front, passingunder a loop, d, if desired, and fastened at the end several inches above, either inside or outside ofthe lining. The cord is madejust long enough to draw the iiy-front together at.
The ily-fronts are easily opened by inserting the fingers between them, and bearing outward on the elastic cord; they close of themselves.
Having thus described myinvcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the iy-fi'ont of pantaloons, the elastic cord c, arranged with the eyclet-holes a and b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
'he above specification of my invention signed by me this third day of May, 1867. i
ISAAC STRATTON.
