W. FFUTT; COMPOUND TOOL.
(Application tiled May 2, 1902.)
APartnr OFFICE.
I.VINFIELD OFFUTT, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COMPOUND TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patenti-No. |706,196, dated August 5, 1902.
Application iiled May 2, 1902 Serial No. 105,642. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD OFFUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Compound Tools, of which the following is aspecication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination-tools 5 and its object is to provide pliers of novel construction having a hammer-head adapted to be detachably secured to the jawsthereof.
A further object is to provide means whereby said head may be readily detached from the pliers when not in use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists inthe novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the perferred form of my invention, and
in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool, showing the parts assembled; and Fig. 2 is a section on line a; no, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by numerals of rcference, 1 is a pair of pliers of desired construction, having grooves 2 formed at one side of its pivot 3 and adapted to serve as a wirecutter. A glass-cutter in the form of a circular disk 4 is journaled in the end of one arm 5 of the pliers, and a claw 6 is arranged at the end of the other arm 7 of the pliers and is adapted to be used for pulling tacks or nails. This claw is adapted, when the pliers are closed, to extend over and to each side of the cutter et and serves to protect the same. Each jaw 8 of the pliers is provided in its working face with a groove 9, and said grooves are adapted to register when the jaws are closed together and form an aperture through the tool.
A hammer-head of suitable form, such as shown at 10, is provided with a recess 11, adapted to receive the closed jaws 8 of the pliers and hold the same irmly therein. When in this position, the grooves 9 in the jaws receive a stud 12, slidably mounted in an aperture 13, formed in the side of the head 10 and extending from the inner face of a spring-strip 14. This strip is secured at one lend and lies within a groove 15, formed in the side of head 10, and is adapted to hold the stud 12 normally projected into the recess 11.
The free end of the strip 15 is bent slightly outward, as shown at 16, so as to permit the strip to be forced outward by a finger of the operator when it is desired to disengage the jaws from the stud.
The inner end of stud 12 is beveled at one side, as shown at 17, so that the same will be forced outward automatically when the ends of the jaws 8 come in contact therewith.
It will be seen that the device is extremely simple in construction, and the securing means permit the parts to be quickly locked together, hold them effectively in locked p0- sition, and do not detract from the appearance of the tool.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thusfully described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the pivoted jaws of a pliers and arms extending therefrom; of a cutting-disk journaled in the end of one arm, and a claw at the end of the other arm adapted to extend over, and guard, the cutter.
2. The combination with a pliers having a jaw grooved in its inner face; of ahead adapted to receive the closed jaws of the pliers, and means in the head for engaging the groove.
3. The combination with the jaws ot' a pliers; of a head having a recess for the reception of the closed jaws, and means for automatically locking the jaws in the recess.
4. The combination with the jaws of a pliers; of a headhhaving a recess therein for the reception of the closed jaws, and a springpressed lug adapted to project into the recess and engage the jaws.
5'. The combination with the jaws of a pliers; of a head having a recess for the reception of the closed jaws, a stud normally extending into the recess and adapted to en- ICO gage the jaws, and a'spring-strip secured to the head and stud and adapted to hold the stud in engagement.
6. The combination with the jaws of a` faces; of ,a head having a krecess therein for the reception Aof the closed jaws, a spring- 15 strip secured to the side of the head, and a beveled stud extending from the strip and into the recess and adapted to engage the grooves and lock the jaws in the recess.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature zo in presence of two witnesses.
WINFIELD OFFUTT.
