l To all 'whom it may concern:
useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
'hereinafter fully describe This invention relates to wrenches and has for an object to provide a wrench embodying new and improved features of durability, reliability, convenience and eiliciency.
With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of `arts as will be and shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed. out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be madel without departing from the spiritr or sacrificing any of the advantages of this' invent-ion.
In the drawings :-I `igure 1 is a view of the improved wrench in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in edge elevation of the improved wrench seen along arrow 2. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the improved wrench taken on lineI 3--3 of Fig. 1.

In its preferred embodiment, the improved wrench forming the subject matter of this application comprises a shank having a rack composed of the teeth 11 formed along one edge and an angularly disposed rigid jaw 12 outstanding from the same ed e. Between thc rack and the rigid jaw is isposed a sliding jaw member 13 carrying the jaw 14 and retained in sliding position upon the shank by the channel member 15 having the opposite and parallel flanges 16 and 17 embracing the shank and j aw member and rigidly secured to the latter by therivets 1S. A .lever 19 is provided and bifureated to form the arms 20 and 21 pivoted to the jaw member 13 near the shank as at 22, the corners of the flanges 16 and 17 being cut away as at 23 to accommodate the arms. Shoulders are produced by recessing the corners of flanges 16 and 17 and constitute' stops for limiting the movement of the lever upon its fulcrnm. The ends of the `arms 20 and 2l are flattened so as to abut firmly against the shoulders when the lever reaches the limits of its movement.
Between the arms the detent 24 is pivoted as at 25 and having a tooth 26 held in' engagement with the rack by the spring 27 secured to the lever by the rivet 28 and bearing resiliently against a shoulder 29 of the detent. Through the arms 20 and 21 is inserted the rivet 30 engaging a shoulder 3 and to limit the movement of the detent 2 and a pin 32 is inserted in the shank to limit the movement of the jaw 13.
In operation the improvement is ap lied to the Work by forci'nlr the lever forwar the ,shank bringing the detent 24 into 'engage ment with the teeth 11 and owing to the 1nclined position of the detent the jaw 13 is forced thereby toward the jaw 12. If one movement of the lever does not move the jaw a sufficient distance the lever is released and thrown back by the spring 27 and the detent drawn into engagement with another ,one of the teeth 11. It will be noted that the jaw member 13 and the keeper 15 are elongated to give a considerable bearing surface upon the shank 10 and that the pivot 22 is near the shank whereby the jaw may be moved and a great pressure exerted after the jaw 14 enga es the work thereby adapting the wrench or use as a pipe or nut wrench and also as a vise to grip wire or 'other articles.
It will be observed that the jaw member 13 and the shank 10 are of uniform transverse thickness, consequently, their sides lie in the same vertical planes and the inner sides of the keeper 15 bear directl against the alined sides of the shank an the jaw member. The space between the arms 20 and 21 in a transverse direction is equal to the transverse dimension of the jaw member 13, consequently the said jaw member may be inserted between the said arms 20 and 21 without reducing the .transverse dimension of the said jaw member and weakening the same. Also the said arms 2O and 21 are of the same transverse dimension as the sides of the keeper v15 and consequently do not project beyond the sides of the said kee er and present shoulders which might inter ere with. the satisfactory manipulation of the wrench. The parts being thus connected to gether a substantial implement is provided and the stress upon the jaw member is conn labut said faces, said lever veyed directly to the lever to which it is attached and from the said lever through the detent 24 to the stock 10. l
