Beit known that I, BRUCE WoLvERToN, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and'u'sefnl Improvements in Hinged Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of farm-gates having means at one or both sides thereof for opening, the said gate; and it comprehends a novel correlation of parts, including a foldable combined brace and pull member and a novel arrangement of latch-bar coperatively joined with the said foldable brace and a supplemental means for tripping the said brace, all of which will hereinafter be first described in detail and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved farm-gate in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic View showing the same in its opened position in dotted lines. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views illustrating the hinge end of the foldable arm and the hingepost to which it is secured. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the bracket-piece cf. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the eye members for supporting the gate. Fig. 7 is a detail View showing the hinge connection of the two members of the foldable arm hereinafter referred to, and Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views illustrating the modified construction of the'said foldable arms.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like numeralsand lettersindicate like parts in all the igures, A designates what l term a foldable combined brace and pull member, consisting of an inner and an outer part a, a', the inner one ofA which has a strap-plate d2, the lower end of which is turned up to engage the pintle as on the bracket-piece d, mounted on the upper end of the short post c, disposed at oneside of the gate, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

To provide for thefoldable member A projecting properly relatively to the gate, the hinge end is beveled at a proper angle, as shown, and the several portions of the memberA areV set inrsuch relation and on such bevel or angle tothe gate as to permit the two portions constituting the said member A having its crank member f2 connected with a sliding latch g, the two crank members and the member CL/ being' so disposed that as the member ct' is pulled back the double crank f will be moved to cause the latch member g to pull back and disengage the latch-post L, the parts being so arranged that the double crank member will be turned the distance of sixty to ninety degrees, it being understood that when the gate is closed andthe members d d assume a straightposition a reverse action is imparted to the double crank member and the latch g' moved forward to hold the gato closed.
Instead of forming the members d a of two` flat Wooden members, as shown in Fig. 1, the said foldable member A may be constructed of two iron-bar sections, as clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 9, both of which terminate in broadened ends'adapted to form a hinge connection with each other by means of the hingepintle 11, and one of the said rods is provided With a hook 12, adapted when the two rods areV extended in the same plane to engage an aperture l2 in the other member, whereby to lock the said rod members in theirrproper adjusted position, it being understood that When the continuity of the foldable member is broken the said hook 12 will automatically move ont of engagement with the aperture 12'-.
The hinge member of the gate Gis provided with an ordinary staple or hook member 15, adapted to seat in the staple 16; but the up- IOO per end of said member has a vertically-projecting hook member 17, movable Within the segmental slot n, formed in the end of the bolt N, made fast to the post P, as shown. The object in providing this form of hinge connection for the gate is to throw the gate from an upright position when it is opened ro assist the opening thereof, and by a similar movement contrawise exerted the weight of the gate will assist in closing.
K designates an eye projected up from the member d near its hinged end, the purpose of which is to receive a cord or wire, which runs over a swivel-pulley Z, suspended from a bar iXedly held on the postP and projected in a plane at right angles to the gate when closed, said pulley being a double one, whereby the ends of the cord R are passed in opposite directions, each end passing over another pulley S on a post T at one side of the gate and having a pull R', as shown.
The manner in which my improved gate is operated is best explained as follows: Assumthe gate to be closed, to open the same it is only necessary to pull upon the cord R from either end, which causes the foldable arm to rise to a vertical position and at the same time to operate the double crank, unlatch the gate, and pull the gate back from engagement with the latch-post. This movement causes the gate to swing outward in the direction of the post c to the position shown in .fi rst by the manner in which the gate is hinged on the post P, the eye and slot allowing the acute angle to t-he hinged end of the gate, and f hinged at its lower end to swing upward; of the sliding latch g, and the double crank e, connected to the latch and the upper end of member A, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the hinged gate, the post c, andthe foldable member A, hinged to post c, and arranged substantially as described; of the latch t, the double crank e, arranged in a vertical plane and having one member connected to the inner end of the latch and the other member connected to the outer end of the foldable member A, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
3. The hereinbefore described improved gate, comprising a gate hinged to tilt its upper part sidewise while moving to an open position, a foldable lever hinged at its outer end to project at an acute angle to the hinged end of the gate, said lever consisting of two sections a af, the latter being hinged to fold flatwise on the former, the double crank e having one member adapted to join with the outer end of lever-section a', the sliding latch g, with its inner end connected to the other crank member, the pivoted lever q, the pullropes and the guides therefor, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
