GATE-OPERATING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OI-IN T. CANNON, citizen of the United States, residing at New Athens, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to farm gates which are mounted to swing horizontally from one side of the line or fencing and which are adapted to be actuated at a convenient distance so as to be opened when approaching the gate and to be closed after passing by the said gate.
The invention relates more particularly to the fmeans whereby the gate is opened and closed and to the device for securing the gate in either of its two extreme positions and for releasing said securing means preliminary to swinging the gate either open or closed.
The invention contemplates an operating bar which is pivoted at its lower end and adapted to move at its upper end, lock means for securing the operating bar in either of its two extreme positions, releasing means for the said lock means, a latch mechanism to cooperate with the lock means to secure the gate when closed, releasing means for the latch mechanism and operating devices to effect both an opening and a closing of the gate from either approach.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the mechanism cooperating with the gate, the inner end portion of the latter being shown. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of the operating bar and the lock means cooperating therewith. Fig 4 is a detail view in elevation of certain parts shown in Fig. 3, the full and dotted lines showing the two positions of the operating bar.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
At opposite sides of the roadway or opening in the fence or inclosure are placed posts 1 and 2 between which the gate 3 operates, said gate being of any desired construction and hinged at one end to the post 1. A latch 4 is pivoted at one end to the gate and is adapted to engage with a stop 5 secured to the post 2 so as to hold the gate closed. A bell crank 6 has one arm connected to the latch 4, the other arm being connected to a lever 7 by means of a rod 8. The lever 7 occupies an approximately vertical position and is pivoted-at its lower end to the gate and when drawn rearward at its upper end releases the gate by disconnecting the latch 4 from the stop 5. An arm 9 is pivoted at its inner end, to the post 1 and extends horizontally from said post and has its outer end connected to the lever 7 by means of a rod or bar 10. A brace 11 pivoted at its lower end to the post 1 supports the outer end of the arm 9. The arm 9 and brace 11 constitute, in effect, a pivoted frame, which when moved rearward at its outer end operates the lever 7 and latch 4 so as to release the gate.
An operating bar 12 is pivoted at its lower end. to the post 1 so as to swing in a plane at a right angle to the plane of the gate. A link 13 pivotally connects the operating bar 12 with the horizontal arm 9 so that when the operating bar is moved in one direction, the arm 9 is swung rearward at its outer end and serves through its intermediate connections to operate the latch 4 and release the gate preliminary to swinging the same open. The operating bar 12 is adapted to be swung from either approach to the gate so as to open and close the latter. A cord or rope 14 extends along the roadway fiom one side of the gate and is provided at its outer end with a pull piece 15, said cord 14 extending to the opposite side of the gate and passing around a pulley 16, thence returning and having connection with the operating bar 12. A pull upon the outer end of the cord, rope or like part 14 swings the operating bar in one direction and effects an opening of the gate. A cord or rope 17 has connection at one end with the operating bar and extends in the same direction as the cord or rope 14 and is provided at its outer end with a pull piece 18 which when drawn effects a closing of the gate.v The cords or ropes 14 and 17 pass over pulleys 19 at the outer end of a racket 2O projected from a post 21 at one side of the roadway and at a distance from the gate to enable the latter to be operated without interference either with or by the one opening or closing the same. A bar 22 is secured to the post 1 and projects from opposite sides thereof and is rovided at its ends with, respectively, pul eys 16 and 23. A cord or rope 24 has connection at one end with the operating bar 12 and extends in an opposite direction to the cords or ropes 14 and 17 and is provided at its outer end with a pull piece 25 which when drawn open, effects an opening of the gate by swinging the operating bar from a normal position. A cord or rope 26 has connection at one end with the operating bar 12 and extends in the direction of the cords 14 and 17 and passes around the pulley 23, thence in the same direction with the cord or ro e 24 and is provided at its outer end witi a pull piece 27 which when drawn upon causes the gate to close, should the same be opened. Pulleys 28 at the'outer end of a bracket 29 secured to a post 30, support the outer ends of the cords, ropes or ike parts 24 and 26. A bar or guide 31 is attached .to the post 1 and projects from opposite sides thereof and is curved at its upper edge in the arc of a circle, whose center coincides with the pivot of the operating bar 12. The bar or guide 31 is notched at or near its extremities to cooperate with latches 32 and 33 applied to the operating bar 12 so as to secure the latter in either extreme position. The latches 32 and 33 are mounted in keepers 34 attached to the operating bar. The latch 32 holds the operating bar in normal osition, that is, when the gate is closed. T e latch 33'secures the o erating bar 12 when the gate is open, t ereby preventing casual closing thereof. The bar 31 directs the operating bar 12 in its oscillating movements and prevents displacement thereof. The keepers 34 form parts of a plate or casting secured to the operating bar 12, and said plate or casting is provided with a lip 35 cooperating with the ar or guide 31 to hold the operating bar 12 in a given position with reference to the post 1 and to direct said bar in its movements. A T-lever 36 is pivoted at 37 to the upper end of the operating bar 12 and-its o posite arms are connected with, respective y, the latches 32 and 33. The inner ends of the several operating cords or ropes 14, 17 24 and 26 have direct connection with the stem of the T-lever 36 so as to operate the same preliminary to moving the operating bar 12, thereby releasing the latter by disengaging the one or the other. of the latches 32. or 33 from the bar or guide 31. A post 38, set to one side of the roadway in line with the posts 1, 21 and 30, limits the swinging movement of the gate when opening the same.
When a proaching the gate in one direction, a pul upon the cord or rope 14 releases the operating bar 12, and as the latter moves, the arm 9 is swung rearward at its outer end and releases the latch 4 and a continued pull upon the cord 18 swings the gate open, the position of the latter being fixed by engagement of the latch 33 with the notch or stop at the opposite end of the bar or guide 31. After the person has passed through the gate opening, a pull upon the cord or rope 26 first effects a release of the latch 33 from the bar or guide 31 and a continued pull upon said cord 26 closes the gate. Upon approaching the gate in an opposite direction, a pull upon the cord or rope 24 o erates in precisely the same manner as a pu upon the cord or rope 14, serving to swing the gate open. After the person passes through the gate opening, the gate may be closed by a pull upon the cord or rope 17, the operation being substantially the same as a pull upon the cord or rope 26.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a gate, a latch mechanism for securing the gate when closed, a swinging arm, connecting means between said arm and latch mechanism, a pivoted o crating bar, connecting means between t e operating bar and said arm, a guide, latches mounted upon the operating bar and adapted to engage with said guide to secure the ate when open or shut, and actuating means or said operating bar and latches and adapted to initially release the latches preliminary to effecting movement of the operating bar to swing the gate open or close 2. In combination, a gate, a latch mechanism therefor, a swingin arm having connection with the latch mechanism, a pivoted operating bar having connection with said arm, a guide, latches mounted upon the operating bar and adapted to engage with said guide to secure the gate when open or shut, a T lever pivoted to the operating bar and having its arms connected with said latches, a gate actuating means for direct connection with the said T lever to initially effect a release of the operating bar preliminary to moving the same to release the gate and swing the same either open or shut.
