GATE-OPERATING MEANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. to, 19115.
Application filed December 5, 1914. Serial No. 875,676.
To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK A. Down, a citizen of the United States, residing near Moscow, in the county of Muscatineand State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin GateOperating Means, of which the following is .a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve,- ments in gate operating means; and it is an object of the invention toprovide novel and improved means of this general character whereby the gate is prevented from maintaining a position other than either the completely open or closed adjustment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts'of my improved gate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for: use,
I all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention'f 'will be carefully defined in the appended claims. 7
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with r'eference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an end elevational view of an embodiment of my invention, the gate included therein being shown in a closed position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my invention as herein disclosed withthe gate shown in an open adjustment; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of my invention as herein set forth and also with the gate in open position; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary elevational view illustrating in detail the essential features of the invention as herein included; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevational view of the latch post as herein included. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the latch herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a gate post having hung thereon, in aconventional manner, the swing ing gate 2, the free end of said gate coacting with the latch post 3. The post 3 is provided with the keeper 4 with which is adapted to coact the latch 5 carried by the gate 2 the gate 2 from a series of properly assembled angle bars 6, and to an intermediate longitudinally.disposed bar 6 of the gate adjacent its hinged extremity is suitably se cured the laterally directed elbow 7, the
outer portion whereof being reinforced by the brace anglebar 8.
Pivotally secured to the outer portion of the elbow 7 about a vertical axis is the operating member or bar 9 having adjacent its free extremity. a depending car 10 pivotally engaged about a horizontal axis with a rock lever 11 operatively supported by the post 12 at a predetermined distance rearwardly of the gate post 1 and in alinement with the posts 1 and 8. As is believed to be selfevident, upward movement of the rock arm 11 serves to adjust the gate 2 into either an open or closed position and in order that the gate may beautomatically maintained in such adjustments, it is to be observed that the free extremity of the rock arm 11 is pro vided with a suitable weight 14.
As herein embodied, the latch 5 constitutes an angular extremity of an elongated rod 15 herein disclosed as operatively supported by a plate 16 suitably secured to the outer vertical bar 17 and by the brace bar 8, herein before referred to, the inner extremity 18 of the bar 15 is also angularly disposed and when the gate is in closed adjustment is disposed in substantial parallelism with the brace bar 8 in order that the same may be effectively protected against contact by the stock. The free extremity of the angular portion 18 terminates in an eye 19 to which is secured an extremity of a wire member 21 which is also secured to a ring 22 supported by a flexible member 23 from which branches the operating flexible members 24. disposed in opposite directions and directed over the guide pulleys 25 suitably secured to the upper extremity of the post 12 and over the guide pulleys 26 supported by the upper extremities of the posts 27 positioned at opposite sides of the gate post 1 at predetermined distances removed therefrom.
The ring 22 has also secured thereto an extremity of a second wire member 28, the lower extremity of such member being secured to the outer extremity of the rock arm enga I I 'in disclosed as a conventional coil spring,-
11 whereby it will'be readily perceived. that such rock arm l1 maybe properly elevated will be perceived that when the rock arm 11 has assumed a substantially vertical positionythe tension of thespring 29 is sufficient to cause a continued movement ofthe gate 2 a dead center.
The open adjustment of the gate is determined, as herein embodied, by the post 30 properly positioned relative to the'gate' post 1 and with which the gate 2 is adapted to contact.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that agate constructed I and hue prevent the arm 1-1 from assuming 7 in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use bv reason of'theconvenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will'also be obvious that my invention is susceptible-of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and. spirit thereof and for this reasonl do not wish to be understood as limiting myself tot he -precijse arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown'in carrying out myinvention in practice. c t
I claim;
1. In combination with a swinging gate, a
rock arm, a; bar gpivota'lly engaged with the I gate about a vertical axis and with the rock arm intermediate the length of the rock arm about a horizontal axis, means engageable with the tree extremity of the rock arm for impart ng vertical movement thereto, and a retractable" member operatively engaged with the gate and the bar for imparting swinging movement to the gate, the upward movement: of the bar under the lnfiuence of the rock arm serving to expand the retractable member to impart swinging movement to the. gate after the barhas been/swung from a' horlzontal position past a vertical posltlon.
2. In combination with a swinging gate, a
rock arm, a bar pivotally engaged with'the gate about a vertical axisand with therock arm intermediate the lengthflof the rockarm about a horizontal axis, meansengageable with the free extremityof the rock arm for imparting vertical movement thereto, and a retractable member operatively engaged with the gate and thebar, for imparting swing; ing movement to the gate; the upward move"- mentof the bar under the influence ofthe rock arm serving toexpand' the retractable member to-impart swinging movement to the gateafter, the bar has been swung from a hcrrizontal position pasta vertical position, the freefextremity of the rockarm be-' ing weighted. I Y v In testimony whereofI hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
