Be it, known that 1, JOHN O. NAsLIN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King, .State of \Vashington, have invented a new and usedeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a door closer, by, the action of which the door is rendered self-closing, and in addition to being durable and very simple in construction, will at the same time close a door, and'thej like, if properly constructed and applied, in such a manner that the old time annoyance of slamming will be almost entirely eliminated; and can also be adjusted so as to increase, decrease and check, and again increase the closing movement of the door before it reaches a closed position, and will hold it closed.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the door closer, as it appears when the door is closed, with the housing shield swung to the side, and the regulating membersexposed to view; 1 representing the door, 2 the head casing, 3 the jamb, 4: the Wall and 5 the of the door closer, as it appears when attached' to the side of the door, opposite to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2- in Fig. 5, the
door is closed, and in Fig. 6, it is swung open to a square position with the wall.
In these figures the same letters-and numbers refer'to the same parts.
The device can be used for any kinds of.
doors and gates, or the like, for either right or left handswinging doors, and on either side if desired.
The two bars forming the hollow struc-. ture, designated by letter A, providing room 'for the tension and regulating members, as shown in Fig. 3, are depressed at the ends so as to meet and form a horizontal clamp joint with bearing bracket iC,'upon the vertical bolt axis K, and also in like manner, meet andf'orm a union with the convergent end 'of arm B, upon bolt axis M;'the opposite bifurcated end of arm B,
forms in like manner .a detachable joint with bracket D, upon bolt axis L. By these bolts, which are provided with heads and screw-threads with nuts, the said joints are.
properly held in operative order, and can readily be adjusted, by. loosening or tightening, as may be required.
When the .device is used on the side of l a door, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2-, bearing bracket 0 should be fastened onto the head casing 2, and bearing bracket D should be fastened onto the door at its upper edge; but when the device is used on the sideof a door, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, bracket C withv arm A should be fastened onto the door, and the divergent end of arm B should be pivoted to the under side of the head piece of the door j amb.
Whether bracket C is fastened onto the head casing 2 higherup than bracket D,
which in the present case I have fastened onto the door at'its upper edge, just high enough so that arm B, which is jointed thereto with its forked end, upon bolt axis L, canswing'clear of the top edge of. the
.door, from which it is deflecting upward untll it forms a union with arm A, upon.

' bracket C; or both of these brackets are set on a horizontal line with each other, in; which case arm B need not be deflected in alinement as shown-in Fig. 4, it is, however,
essential that the construction, positions and adjustments of both these; brackets and arms be such, as -to permit of the free" and normal movement of the door, or hinged element.
The lateral deflection-in arm B, near its convergent end, forms an open space wherein the. forked end of pendant Frmay'be' freely turned upon pin P, when inserted in that proximity in one or another of about bolt axis M, in sector E; which in i holes 1 to 7 providedon a concentric line; if I either right or left hand purpdses. however, manifest that, if bracket were in line with bracket D, this deflection in arm B would be superfluous, nor would sector E need to be detachable from arn B, but could then be an integral part thereof, as said arm B and sector E, could then be used for either right or left hand purposes, by merely being turned over one way or another to suit conditions.
From the foregoing it will be seen that, when the door is swung open from the closed position in Fig. 1 to the open position in Fig. 2, the horizontally jointed arms A-B, relatively spread about axis M; and it is this relative spreading, in combination with pendant F and the consequent tension of spring G, which is essential and is utilized for the operation of automatically closing the door. For this purpose spring G, must be of suitable length, tension and size, and, therefor has been provided at one end with an adjustable connection, consisting of a rod-hook N, screw-threaded with nut at one end, extending some distance into the spring, and at the other end is shaped into a suitable hook, to be attached in one or another of holes 1 to 5 in bracket C, while the opposite end of said spring is merely shaped into a hook, by which it may be attached to aperture 0, provided in what will be termed the floating speed-regulating pendant F, which at one end is adapted for adjustable axis connection, as by means of pin P, insertible in one or another of holes 1 to 7, provided in sector E, on a concentric line about axis M, of the union of a'ms A-B.
The swinging end of pendant F is shown as reaching a considerable distance beyond aperture 0 therein, and is otherwise adapted at that end to form a groove-abutment, as at Q, against which a portion of spring G will press, when said pendant F by proper connections and adjustments assumes certain positions, as elsewhere described, during the relative movements of the door and arms A SL-B.
Said pendant F, besides being adapted to swing on pin P, and forked at that end to straddle sector is curved and shaped so that it may not come in contact with the union of arms AB at M, when the door is swung open, and to be guided and kept in proper position when the door swings back on its closing course. It forms at the other edge a dentabutment, as at T, against which adjusting striker J, at a certain instant of the closing movement of the doorwill strike and press pendant F and spring G to the side, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Said striker has at I, a screw-threaded passage through arm B, nut J and collarhold E extending at that point from sector E; which together with the other regulating members described include, in addition to lltli r nj eansfor closing the door, the important for regulating and controlling its closing movements, or if so desired, to check its movements entirely.
For this purpose I have provided the said adjusting striker J, which has the function to strike its inward pointing end against the adjacent abutment T, of pendant F, as the door swings from the open position in Fig. 2, wherein it is seen that said striker 5, having engaged pendant F, causes the latter to move across "the directdine between pin P and the connecting point of springG in bracket C; thus, to some extent for a short distance, checking the closing move ment of the door. While, as the door slowly moves on and the position of arms AB change, the tension and directing force of spring G also become changed, and increases, so that the movement of the door again increases more and more until it reaches a closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1. The
farther the pendant is pressed in that main ner, the greater will the resistance of the device be to the closing movement of the door.
Furthermore, spring G can otherwise be adjusted so as to exert a stronger or weaker pulling effect upon the closing movementof the door, while swinging from the position in Fig. 2, until the end of striker J 611C0ll1lters pendant F, which until this instant swings freely about pin axis P, while the tension of the spring uninterruptedly moves the opened door on its closing course; wherefore, with proper adjustment of said spring G, by the insertion of hook N in one or an other of holes 1 to 5 in bracket C, and the attachment of pendant F by pin P in one or another of holes 1 to 7 in sector E, the closing movement of the door can, to some extent, be increased, decreased and, when wide open, even be checked to a standstill; but after the instant striker J encounters pendant F, itSClOSiiig movement is wholly controlled by the latter, if properly adjusted by the means specified.
From which it may be clearly understood,
how readily by these means, the closing movement of the door can be regulated and controlled, according to the weight and dimension of the door.
The coor closer can be used for either right or left hand swinging doors, and on either side, by merely separating and again combining the several parts, as may be required.
For the purpose of shielding and protecting the several parts from view and injury, particularly that of arm A, which is constructed in two parts, one passing under and one over the tension device, but united at each end, I have provided a suitable housing shield H, covering arm A, except the side facing arm B, and adapted to be held in place at one end by means of bolt axis K,
' said members, and means carried by one of said arms for engaging the sa1d pendant and at the other end suitably adapted to be slid in place sidewise, it having transverse slits in each side, which are depressed so as to enter under the nut and head of axis M, with which it is held in place; and can therefore, readily be loosened and swung to one side, as shown in 'Fig. 1, and again replaced when required.
What I claim is:
1. In a door closer and check, a movable member and a stationary member, a swinging arm carried by said movable member, a second swinging arm carried bysaid stationary member, a pivot securing the free ends of said arms together, a sector carried by one of said arms, a pendant pivotally connected to said sector, a spring connecting said pendant and one of said members, and means carried by one of said arms for limiting the movement of said pendant with respect to one of said arms.
2. In a door closer and check, a movable member and a stationary member, aswinging arm carried by said movable member, a swinging arm carried by said stationary member, a pivot securing the free ends of said arms together, means on one of said arms supporting a pendant, a spring connecting said pendant and one of said members, and means forlimiting the movement of said pendant with respect to said means carried by one of said arms.
3. In a door closer and check, a stationary member and a movable member, a pair of pivoted arms, connected at their free ends to said members, means on one of said arms for supporting a pendant, a pendant, spring means connecting said pendant and one of whereby the said spring means is flexed to check the motion of said movable member. .4. In a door closer and check, a hinged movable part and a stationary part,'a pair of swinging arms having their divergent ends respectivelyjointed, one to' the said hinged part and the other to the said 'sta tionary part, means for attaching their divergent ends to said parts and for securing their convergent ends together, a spring adjustably connected to one of said parts, a sector carried by one of said arms for adjustable pendant connection, a pendant connecting said spring andsector, and a striker adjustably disposed fromone of said arms copies of this patent may be obtained for to engage and press the said pendant and spring sidewise so as to limit the tensio with respect to said hinged part.
5. In a door closer and check, a hinged movable part and a stationary part, a pair of jointed arms having their parted ends respectively jointed, one to thesaid hinged part and the other to the saidstationary part, a variable sector carried by one of said arms, a pendant adjustably connected atone end to said sector, and a spring adjustably connecting said pendant to one of said Parts whereby the hinged part can be rendered self-closing and varied in motion; and
means carried by one of said arms for engaging the said pendant so as'to limitthe closlng movement of the said hinged part.
6. In a door closer and check, a hinged movable part and a stationary part, a sprlng-houslng swmgmg member and a deflected swlnging member, means for attaching the divergent ends of said members to the said parts and for securing their, convergent ends together, a sector adapted on said deflected member for varied pendant connection, a spring adjustably connected to one of said parts, a pendant connecting said spring. and sector whereby the said hinged part can be rendered self-closingand varied in motion, and astriker adjustably disposed from said deflected member whereby to engage the said pendant and means, a spring connected at one end to said pendant and at the other end adjustably connected to one of said parts, wherebythe hinged part can be rendered self-closing and varied n motion, and means dlsposed from one of said arms for engaging the said pendantandlimit the movement of the said hinged part; and .a detachable housing shield carried by said armsfinclosing the said spring and pendant.
