To all whom it mayconcem: v g V Be it known that'LJOHN Hornnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use- .ful Improvements in Door Checks and Closers, of which the following is a specification. w I I 7 My invention relates to an improvement in the class of door checks whereinthe door is closed by means of a suitable contraction spring and is checked or retarded in its closing motion by means of a cushion of air or other fluid in order toretard the final movement of the same and prevent the slamming thereof. 7
A further object ofmy invention is to construct a door check and closer in as simple a manner as possible to avoid the same getting out of order, and toreducethe parts to a minimum number in orderto'decrease the cost of manufacture but without detracting from its efiiciency.
The above and still other objects I accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal plan view of my improved door check and closer applied to a door and frame, showing the door closed; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the door open at substantially a right angle to the door frame; Fig. 3 is a vertical end elevation of the same showing the door in the position shown in Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, showing the adjustable connection between the two arms or toggle.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable door that is supported by hinges on one of its vertical edges that are secured to the frame B, surrounding the door opening in the wall of the building. The door check and closer itself comprises a cylindrical or tubular member 6 in which a suitable piston 7 is adapted to operate and these two parts are constructed and arranged in substantially the same manner as described in a pending application for United States Letters Patent filed December 26, 1912, Serial No. 738,558, and need not therefore be de- Speoification of Letters Patent.

scribed in detail herein. Suflice it to say, however, that they piston-rod 7 in this instance is hollow and a coiled contraction spring in is inclosed thereby, one end of said spring being connected to the closure cap at the outer end of the piston-rod while the opposite end of said spring is similarly connected tov the closure cap at the outer end of vided with a pivotal lug that is adapted to be insertedbetween the parallel arms of a bifurcated pivot bracket 8 secured to the .l ntel or upper horizontal member of the door-frame. The outer end of the cylinder 6 is supported u'pon the hinge of a suitable toggle one of the members'of which com- ..prlses a horizontally disposed substantially L-shaped arm 10 that has its upper end reduced to form a pintle 11 that is screwthreaded and passes up through an opening in a lug 9 projecting longitudinally from the cap on the outer end of the cylinder 6. Said L-shaped arm 10 has its inner end bifurcated and pivotally mounted on a bracket 12 secured in any suitable manner to the upper edge of the door and which is so positioned'that said arm under normal conditions is in a plane at substantially right angles to the plane of the door when closed. The other member of this toggle comprises an extensible or adjustable link, the inner member 13 of which is pivotally secured to the door frame above the door by means of a bracket 14 and having its shank screw-threaded to fit into the screw-threaded bore of the other member 13 thereof. Member 13 is preferably bent or deflected laterally at its outer end and is adapted to be adjustably and pivotally mounted in a slotted lateral boss 10 that is formed on one side of the shorter vertical portion of the L-shaped arm 10 before mentioned, which pivot is below and substantially in axial alinement with the pintle 11 for the cylinder.
It will be observed from the above that the pivotal point of the outer end of the cylinder being in alinement with the plvot or hinge of the toggle and the pivotal end of the piston being at an acute angle to the axis of said arm 10 the tendency of the conwill remain in an opened position. This contingency will not occur until: the door,
has been opened to an angle of more than a Eight angle (90) to the plane of the door rame,
" "Havin thus described my invention what TE'claim as new and desire to secure by LettiersPatent, is-:'"
