Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WARNER, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and VStateot Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare that .the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference beinghad to the .accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in pneumatic` door-checks such as are used for doors having closing-springs.I
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out inthe appended claim.

Admission of air to the cylinder is afforded by the conwhich packing consists of a flexible disk of leather or like material attached centrally to the inner face of the piston and so arranged as to permit the passage of air past it when the piston is drawn outwardly, but to hold the air when the piston is thrust inwardly. The lever E is connected by a pivot h to a bracket H, which is secured in any suitable manner to the inner face of the door near the hinged edge thereof, At its opposite orouter end said lever is connected bya pivot ewith the free end of the link F, which link F is connected at its uopposite end by a pivot f `with a bracket'I, attached tothe inner face of thedoor-jamb. Thepivotalconnection ofsaid link'F with the door-jainb is arranged at a point between the innerend of the cylinder andthe hinged edge of the door. Moreover, said link -F is bent or deflected downwardly at a point near its outer end, so as to bring its main part or portion below the level of the cylinder and avoid contact of the lever with the cylinder in the movement of the parts.
As a result of the bent form of the lever E described when the door is in its open position, as sbown'in Fig. 2, the piston -will be drawn outwardly in the cylinder, saidcylinder and link F at such time being in positions approximately at right angles to those originally occupied by them, so that when by the opening of the door the parts are placed in the position described the piston will be moved a distance nearly equal to the distance between the pivot of the cylinder and the pivot 'f of the link F plus the distance between the pivot CZ', joining the piston-rod with the lever E and the pivot e at the outer end of said lever.
Obviously a main feature of the device is involved in the separation of the piston-regl pivot d' and the pivot e, connecting the link with the actuating-lever E, so that on opening the door the piston moves outwardly and upon closing the door the piston moves inwardly in the cylinder. This operation would also obtain if the pivot joining the link to the jamb were placed in vertical alinement with the pivot of the cylinder, and the connection of said parts with the lever E remained as shown in the drawings, it being obvious that in such case t-he piston would move out on opening the door and 4into the cylinder on closing the door. It will also be apparent that if the connection of the pistonrod with the end of the link were at the point Awhere the link joins the lever E instead of in the place indicated in the drawings the result would be practically the same as before; but in that case the piston would be moved to an extent due to the distance apart of the cylinder-pivot and link-pivot only. In other words, the feature of lateral separation of the pivotal connections of the link and cylinder with the actuating-lever and the door-jamb affords means for moving the piston in the cylinder, andwhile such lateral separation at either the jamb or actuatinglever alone will produce this result the combination of the two features affords maximum movement and accomplishes the best result. Moreover, the lateral separation of the link-pivot from the cylinder-pivot provides the greatest degree of motion in the piston when the door is approaching its open position, but will lbe insufficient to check the door at the closing-point if relied upon alone. The lateral separation of the link-pivot fand piston-rod pivot d' on the actuating-lever, however, gives motion to the piston at once on first opening the door and can be depended on by itself to accomplish the result; but such a construction would not always be desirable, because giving too great a projection of the outer end of the lever from the inner face of the door in order to get a long enough arm to give the required motion. The best results, therefore, are obtained by lateral separation of the pivots at both ends of the cylinder and link.
The opening at the inner end of the cylinder for the escape of air from the cylinder is formed by'means of a screw-threaded aperture c in the end wall C, in which aperture is inserted a screw-stud c2, having an oblique flattened face c3, Figs. 5 and 6, by which the size of the exit-opening may be varied through endwise movement of the screw in said aperture c'. This construction affords a simple means of regulating the escape of air from the cylinder and enables the rapidity of 'its outflow to be Varied in accordance with the pressure `of the spring and other considerations.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the outwardly-bent part or laterally-extended arm E' of the actuating-lever E is approximately parallel with the inner face of the jamb or at right angles with the `face of the door when the dooris closed. The arm may, however, be located at a somewhat different angle with respect to these parts, the only essential requirement being that when the door is opened the said actuating-lever turning on its connection with the link as a fulcrum should throw the piston to the outer end of the cylinder and when the door is closed it should throw the piston to the inner end of the cylinder. It will also be noted that the attachment of the cylinder to the jamb and the piston-rod to the actuating-lever is not essential, as substantially the same result would be arrived at by the equivalent construction, in which these parts are reversed and the cylinder pivoted'to the actuating-lever, while the piston-rod is pivoted to the door-jamb. This reversal of the construction is therefore intended to be included in the matters covered by the appended claim.
I claim as my invention- A door-cheek comprising a cylinder pivotally connected with the inner face of the doorjamb at a distance from the door, an actuating-lever pivoted to the door near the hinged edge thereof, said lever being bent to form an arm which'projects laterally from the door, a piston in the cylinder provided with a piston-rod which is pivotally connected with the said lever at the inner end of said laterallyprojecting arm, and a link pivoted at its inner end to the inner face of the door-jamb near the door and between the pivot of the cylinder and the said door, and at its outer ICO IZO
