'@-The invention `is illustratedin its prenoorocrincx- My primary object is to provide door-.
'check of the character indicated o'ffsimple construction and improved operation.
Y:terred embodiment in the` accompanying drawing in whichi l `Fignre 1 represents a broken plan sectional 'view of a doorf' and door-jamb equipped with myimproved check, the
dotted lines showing the door in the open,
position; Fig. 2, a broken elevationalfview of the sanieg'Fig. 3, a broken sectional View l showing the cylinder and plunger construetion; Fig. 4, a vienT of a spring employed in connection twith the cup'or packing yof the plunger; and Fig. 5, aview of a spring elnployed in connection' with a ivoted arm which is connected "with the outer end ofthe plunger.
In the illustration given, A represents a door-jamb; B a door connected therewith by spring-hinges l; and C, my improved door-check. Any suitable hinges and spring device for closingthe'door may be u employed..` ln the illustration given, an or-` dinary spring-hinge 1 is shown. y
'The device C preferably comprises a cyl` inder attached to one leaf or" a hinge 3 which is applied to the door; a plunger et movable in said cylinder; a bracket 5` applied to the door-jamb; an arm 6 pivotally connectedjat one end to said bracket and at the other end to the outer end of the plunger i; and a coil-spring 7 having one ,end attached to the bracket -5 and the other end adapted to bear on the arm 6, said spring tending tof maintain the arm 6 in contact with a Wall or stop 8 4r'or the bracket 5.
' The hinge has one leaf 9 adapted to be attached to the door, and another leaf V10 to which the cylinder 2 is attached at one end. Said cylinder 2 has a base-endll secured by rivets '12 to the `leaf 10, and said cylin Speeication of Letters Patent.

foration which receives the end of a small cylinder or casing 13 which extends' through a perforation 14 with which the .leef 10 is provided. 7llhe cylinder i3 has its inner end in free communication with the cylinder 2, and is provided `with a closed outer end lhaving a passage 16 guarded by a ball-valve 17. The cyiinder also has a lateral port 18 guarded by the point of a screw 19 which has threaded connection with one Wall of the cylinder 13, said screw l thus servingas an adjustable valve. lThe ball 17 seats outwardly and is adapted to pull away from the port 16 to admit, airl` freely while the door is being opened. Durin the ,operation `or/losing the door,`the i 4va ve 17 is forced to its'set position, and thev K through the port 18, i l i y A escape oi air is'then which is regulable.
The plunger 4 has its inner end provided Ivvith a head carrying a flexible cup or bushing 2O which may be :formed of leather, the ila-nge` of said cup-shaped member contact` ing with the inner 'Wall oi' the cylinderv -2. Within the ilange of the cup-shaped member 2O is located a resilient split-ring, or circular spring, 21 Whose function. is to maintain the'ilange of the member 20 in close contact 'with the inner Wall of the cylinder 2. Thus passage oi" air and dust past the bushing is prevented, a close joint lbeing al- Ways maintained, so that when the air escapes from the cylinder 2 during the operation oi closing the door, the escape must be through the cylinder 13 port 18 thereof. Not only is a close" 'joint maintained between 'the piston and cylinder 2, providing `for a certainty of resistance in operation, but injury to the cup-shaped member, or packing, 20 is avoided', since the member 20 will not be dried out and otherwise injured by the passage of air and grit between it and the cylinder.
The bar, or arm, '8 is provided with a perforation 22, 'Which receives a laterally turned end 23 of the plunger e, thus providing a pivotal connection. The bracket 5 has 'a base-portion 24 Which is secured to the doorjamb and has an outwardly projecting arm, or member, 25 which is formed to support a pivot 26 with Whichthe adjacentend of the iti@ lob
arm 6 is connected, and is also termed to provide the Wall, or stop, 8 against which ,the arm 6 is normally held by the spring 7 Asrshovvn, the spring 7 has a coiled portion supported by the pivot 26, and has a short varm 2;? secured to the base-portion 24 of thek A o ening of the door, however, the spring 7 yields, allowing the arm 6 to turn about the pivot 26, and finally the plunger 4f is withdrawn from the cylinder 2 the full length of the stroke, a lspring 4a which surrounds the plunger and extends short of the free end of the cylinder serving to cushion the piston in its final outward movement. When the door is released,v the usual spring with which it is provided closes the door, the first clos-` ing action being aided by the spring 7, so that a rapid closing movement results dur ing the Aiirst part of the closing operation, and thereafter theV piston completes its movement, expelling the air with less force through the port 18 so that slamming of the door is avoided. It should be added that in the operation of opening the door the check-valve 17 opens to admit air freely to the cylinder 2, so that no resistance from the formation of a vacuum will result.
- inasmuch as l have illustrated no spring connecting the plunger and cylinder 2, there genees would be no tendency, in the construction illustrated, for the door toy close completely after thel arm 6 resumesits position against the wall 8. y rlhe spring of the usual springhinge, or some other extraneous spring, 1s therefore depended upon in the construction illustrated to complete the closing movement of the door. Obviously, however, any desired arrangement of 'spring-device `for forcing the door to the completely closed position may be employed in connection with my invention. A
The foregoing detailed description has beenl given for clearness of understanding only, and-no undue limitation should be understood therefrom but the appended claim should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a bracket equipped with a pivot and stop, a link connected with said pivot and bearing against said stop, a spring connected with said bracket and tending to maintain said linkin engagement with said stop, a cylinder, supporting means therefor, and a plunger movable in said cylinder and having jointed connection with said link.
