2 Claims.
The invention relates to door checks and has )r its object to provide a door check which may be sed in connection with a door closer, and which oor check comprises a cylinder having one of its ads anchored to the door frame, and its piston )d pivoted to a member carried by the door; the iston being provided with check valves and an :ljustable ported regulating valve, through which zgulating valve fluid passes to one side of the iston on the closing operation, and in the oppote direction simultaneously with the unseating f the check valve, upon opening of the door, for lowing a rapid opening. Also to provide detent leans in the connection between the piston rod rid the door carried bracket for holding the door l open position.
With the above and other objects in view the ivention resides in the combination and arrangerent of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in ie drawings, described and claimed, it being unarstood that changes in the precise embodiment the invention may be made within the scope of hat is claimed without departing from the spirit the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is top plan view of the door check iapted for use in connection with a door closer, lowing the same applied to a door frame and Figure 2 is a front elevation of the device shown Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged top plan View of the ieck shown in Figure 1, showing parts in section better illustrate the dent holding means. Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view [rough the check cylinder and piston, showing ie parts in the position assumed when the door closing.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but show- .g the parts in the position assumed when the )or is opening.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view through re ported regulating valve.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a modified form door check, showing the same practically conialed within the upper part of the door frame. Figure 8 is a top plan view of the device shown Figure 7.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I desigites a conventional form of door frame, 2 a door 1d 3 the door hinges. The door check comprises cylinder 2! pivotally connected at 22 to the door ame l and has reciprocally mounted therein a ston shaft 23. The piston shaft 23 terminates a valve 24 which cooperates with a valve seat 25, and the valve is provided with longitudinally extending fluid ports 26, through which ports fluid passes during a door opening or closing operation. Shaft 23 is threaded at 2! into a reciprocating piston 28 having spring actuated check valves 29 therein, which check valves are closed on the door closing operation and during the checking operation, and at which time the oil or fluid passes through the ports 26, however, on
, the door opening operation the check valves 29 are opened for allowing a, more rapid flow of fluid to the opposite side of the piston, thereby allowing the door to be quickly opened as shown in Figure 5. The valve seat 25 is carried by a sleeve 30, threaded into the piston, and the sleeve at opposite sides thereof is provided with ports 3|. It will be seen that a simple door check is provided. Secured to the door 2, adjacent the hinging point 3, is a bracket 32 having an upstanding pin 33, the outer side of the pin being provided with a ball receiving recess 34, which recess receives the spring actuated detent ball 35 when the door is opened degrees. The tension is sufficient to maintain the door in open position until overcome manually during a movement of the door. It will be seen by adjusting valve 2a in relation to valve seat 25, by means of the threaded connection 21 of the rod 23 in the piston 28, that the amount of fluid passing through the piston may be varied.
Refering to Figures 7 and 8, the door check in this form, has the internal parts of those shown in Figures 1 to 6, however the cylinder 21 is entirely concealed within the upper portion 36 of the door frame I, and is hingedly connected at 31 therein. The piston rod 23 is connected to a Z link 38 within the door frame, however the arm 39 of the 2 link extends outwardly through a slot 40 in the side of the frame and is pivotally connected at 4| to an upstanding pin 42 carried by a bracket 43, secured to the upper end of the door 2, as shown in Figure 8. It will be seen that during a door closing or opening operation the device, particularly the cylinder, will be concealed from view at all times. By making the Z bar in this particular shape it is obvious that as the door opens the portion 38a will be moved outwardly and clear the ends of the slot 40 when the door is opened.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A door check comprising a cylinder hingedly connected to a door frame, a reciprocating piston within said cylinder, a piston rod carried by said piston and having its outer end anchored to a hinged door, check valve means carried by the piston and through whieh fluid within the cylin: UNITED STATES PATENTS der passes to opposite sides of the piston, a constantly open port through the piston, said con- Number Name Date stantly open port being formed by a valve carried 995,665 Danielson J1me 1911 by the piston rod and cooperating with a, valve 5 1,112,825 e e Oct. 6, 1914 seat and longitudinally extending ports carried 1,314,400 Holtzman 9 by the valve end of the piston rod. ,4 Hanson Apr. 7, 193
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 including ad- 2,045,076 Gar ison June 23, 193 justing means for the piston rod for varying the FOREIGN PATENTS valve end thereof ,inrelation to the! valve seat.10: carried by the piston rod; Number 2 Date JAMES W HOLMAN 304,368 Great Britain Jan. 21, 1929 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the 15 file of this patent:
