GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,542, dated July 2'?, 1880,
Application tiled May 3i, 1880.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. GARRE'M,` a citizen ot the United States, residing at Davenport,in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact descrip! tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of gates which, when connected with suitable mechanism, are capable of being opened and closed by the passenger, either on horseback or in a carriage, and applies more particularly to a gate of the construction shown and described in my patent of September 3, 1878, No. 207,600. v
Figure l is a perspective View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the gate in an elevated or raised position; and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
The present invention has for its object to simplify the construction of the mechanism for operating the gate to open and close it by an arrangement of cords or ropes in connection with a suitable balancing device and weighted latch; also, means for preventing the gate from closing against the outside of the front post in windy weather.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of devices 0r mechanism shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, which reprepresent a perspective view of a gate embodying my invention, A is the main post or posts, slotted at their upper ends, and having secured thereto a cross-bar, a; and B is the end post connected to the bottom plank, C.
The gate D has upon one of its sides the usual keeper or elbow, with which the latch engages for holding the gate closed. The gate D has pivoted to it legs or braces b c, arranged in pairs on each side thereof, the lower ends of said legs or braces b being pivoted to the posts A, while the legs or braces c, which are located nearer the hind end or rear of the gate,
(No model.)
are pivoted to girders d, secured to the bot.- tom plank, O, and theinncr sides of the main posts A.
These several parts, with few exceptions, are similar in construction to my former pat-- ent, rods E heilig similarly connected to the legs'or braces b for operating the gate.
To the main posts A are secured brackets c, which form bearings and supports for rods F, having' secured to their free ends any suitable weights f adjust-able thereon, so as to adapt. the operating mechanism to heavy or light gates. ln the former case the weights are moved nearer to the ends of the rods, and farther from the ends when a light gate is used, thus perfectly balancing the gate and dispensing with the long levers usually1 employed.r
To the rear or inner end of the rods E are secured in anysuitable manner the upper ends ofthe rods E, and also one end ofa cord,g, and a cord, h, is connected to the free end of a weighted latch, G, which is pivoted to the inner side of one of the posts A, the latch being weighted for the purpose of causing it to drop readily to its place after being raised.
It will be noticed when the latch is down it assumes a slanting position on the post, which causes it to brace directly against the elbow of the gate when closed. A further benefit and valuable result is obtained by pivoting the latch at a point so that it will assume a slanting position, as when the gate'is closing the latch will drop to its place before it reaches its closed position. The keeper or elbow of the gate, as it closes, strikes the latch and pushes it forward. and as soon as the gate is closed the latch drops to its place and securely fastens it, the front end of the gate standing '1 IDO former being connected to one of the main posts A and the latter to the under side ofthe cross-bar a.. The cords pass th rough the slotted ends of the posts A, and over pulleys m, suspended from the ends of posts H, one at each side oi the gate, the cords at their ends having handles fn, which may be weighted to keep the cords taut and prevent them from tangling, also to steady them in time of wind, to facilitate their being grasped by the hand while seated in the vehicle.
A serious objection to this class of gates has been in not being able to close them straight to the front post, B, in time of wind, as when a strong side wind is blowing the gate will invariably close outside of the post. This objection I have endeavored to overcome by placing a guide, I, at the rear end and at the upper side of the lowerl rail ot' the gate, which is just wide enough to fill the space between the braces. The front end of the guide I is tapered to the width of the gate-frame, so that it cannot catch in opening and closing the gate, and the foot ofthe hind gate-head is also made wide enough to lill the space between the legs or braces b c. 1t will therefore be seen that in the windiest weather the guide I will cause the gate D to travel in a straight line to the front post, B, without turning or pressing out laterally and closing on the outside of said post.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The gate D, having pi voted legs or braces b c, and the rods E, in combination with the balancing device consisting of the rods F and adjustable weights f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the gate D and pivoted lr gs or braces b c, of the rods E, weighted latch G, and the cords g h, connected to the latch and balancing device and arranged to operate substantially as and t'or the purpose specified. v
8. The gate D, having the guide I, in combination with the pivoted legs or braces b and means for operating the gate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH E. GARRETT.
