to means for operating farm gates into open or closed position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective mechanism for swinging farm gates into open position from either side of the gateway without the necessity of the operator leaving his seat or saddle, the gate being as readily closed after the operator has passed through the gate.
More particularly, the object of my invention consists in the provision of means for simultaneously operating the members of a double gate into open or closed position, the gates being so intergeared that they may be swung with a minimum of labor and incldent jar.
With the above objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and de scribed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation, one of the posts being broken away to show the gate operating mechanism, 7
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the gates in open position,
Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an operatlng track used in connection with the apparatus.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the gate posts, each 0 which is formed of a pair of spaced parallel uprights between which is preferably secured the cross bar 2 at a suitable overhead elevation. Pivotally secured between the members of the posts 1 are the gates 3 of suitable and usual construction with the exception of the top short bars 1 which act as uides and braces for the guide bands 5 which are formed of angle-iron and are bolted upon opposite sides of the gates 3 in coincident relation so that one flange thereof Specification of Letters Patent.

extends outwardly from the sides of the gates. The gates are carried by studs 6 which operate in the bearings 7, the latter being located at a suitable height so as to permit the gates to swing into vertical position between the uprights of the posts 1. Secured to the lower ends of the bands 5 upon one side of the gates 3 are the cables 8, which thence pass for a certain distance over the curved portion of the bands and are passed through pulleys 9 which are secured to the inner sides of the posts 1. above the gates. From these pulleys the cables are passed to corresponding pulleys 11 upon the upper ends of posts 12 positioned at suitable distances from. the gateway upon opposite sides of the latter and also upon opposite sides of the driveway. Suitable weights 1 secured to the free ends of these cables serve as handles for the operator to grasp in pulling the cables for opening the gates, it being obvious that by pulling the cables downwardly through the pulleys 11. causes the gates to be elevated by the operation. of the cables 8 upon the bands 5. Secured to the rear ends of the bands 5, which. are extended rearwardly to provide the brackets 14 are the ends of other cables 15 which are passed through the pulleys 16 also carried by the posts above the gates, but upon the outer sides of the former, after which the cables 15 are passed through pulleys 17 which are also carried by the posts 12 and are weighted as at 18, so that the weights 18 counterbalance the weights of the cables 8. Thus when the weights are lowered. the cables 15 are consequently raised through the retraction. of the cables 8, and vice versa, when the last mentioned. cables are operated. to close the gates. Positioned between the uprights of the posts 1, in directly opposite positions, are the pulleys 19 which appear directly below corresponding pairs of pulleys 20 also located between the uprights of the posts 1 in suitably spaced relation, brackets 21 being provided for their proper rotative mounting. Secured to the lower end of the second bands 5 upon each gate is a cable 22 which passes thence around the bands 5 to the adjacent pulley 19 thence upwardly over the superimposed pulley 20 across the gateway just below the cross bar 2 over the opposite pulley 20, thence in front of and below the opposite pulley 19, after which its end is connected to an eyelet 23 upon the opposite gate, the eyer of each let 23 being preferably located on the rear upper corner of the gate. Thus, the cables 22 being similarly but reversely connected between the two gates are operative, when one or the other gate is actuated to swing the second gate simultaneously and with a balanced action.
When it is desired to open the gate, either of the cables 8 or the weights 13 is actuated thereby pulling up on the lower ends of the corresponding guide bands This action tends tolift the gate, and by reason of the connecting cables 22 the gates are simultaneously thrown back to open position, as indicated in Fig. 2. Obviously this action raises the weights 18, and projects the cables 15 rearwardly over the pulleys 16 and behind the post 1. In order to close the gates, the Weight 18 is now pulled downwardly, this action causing the cable 15 to pull upon the rear end 14 of the guideband 5 and lift the gates to their closed position.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and easily actuated form of gate operating mechanism. The guide or track bands 5 which are duplicated upon opposite sides of each gate form gate a very rigid structure, aside from their functions of properly guiding and positioning the cables 8 and 22. The gates are balanced for openlng or closing,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the so that little power is needed for their actuation in either position, and they are equally simply connected for simultaneous balanced action when either one of the gates are actuated into open or closed position. IVhat I claim as my invention is The combination with gate posts, of gates pivoted between the posts to be swung into vertical position, arcuate cable guide bands mounted upon opposite sides of each gate, and extending from the lower edge of the gate to the upper rear corner thereof, a cable connected to the lower end of one of the bands on each gate and carried over the band to the corresponding post for lifting the gates, a cable connected to the upper rear end of each of the gates for actuating the gates into closed position, and a cable extending from the lower end of each one of the second of the arcuate guide bands to the adjacent post and connected across the gate posts, and pulleys carrying the last mentioned cables whereby actuation of one of the gates causes the simultaneous and similar action of the other gate.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
