tiNrrE an era JOHN C. DUNER, OF WHEATON, ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may 'concern' lie it known that I, JOHN C. DUNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the construction of multiple swinging doors or gates, and has for its principal objects; the provision of an improved and simplified door of this character adapted to swing back from its plane of closure a minimum distance in opening and closing; the provision of a door of the type specified so arranged to fold compactly and provided with means for positively guiding the door sections to folded position; and the provision of improved and simplified means for holding the doors in closed position. Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 isa plan view of the construction with the door in open or folded position,
I igure 2 is a similar view with the door in closed or unfolded position,
Figure 3 is a partial side elevation of the construction shown in Figure 2,'
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail new showing the means for locking the two outer sec tions of the door together,
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail view showing the means'for locking :the two inner sections together,
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail view showing the joint between the door j amb and the outer section of the door,
Figure 7 is a plan View of a modified form of construction with the door in closed position,
Figure 8 is a similar view with the door in open position,
Figure 9 is a partial side elevation of the construction shown in Figure 7, and
Figure 10 is an enlarged detail View showing the means for locking the three sections of the door together.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, it will be seen that the door consists'of four sections, 1, 2, 3 and 4, hinged together by means of the hinges 5, 6 and 7. The inner supporting section 1 is pivoted to the door jamb 8 by means of the hinge 9. The member 10 provided with the guide grooves 11 and 12 is secured to the casing of the door above the Specification of Letters Patent.

sections, and the sections 2 and 4 are engaged therewith by means of the roller studs 13 at the upper ends of such sections. By this construction the outer edges of the sections 2 and 4 are made to follow the course 'of the slots 11 and 12 when the doors are opened or closed, and such outer edges are thus positively carried to their proper positions when the supporting section 1 is moved either to open or closed position. The door jamb adjacent the edge of the section 4 is grooved at 14 as indicated in detail in Figure 5 and the edge of the section 4 is provided with beveled members 15 for fitting into this groove, the bevel shape permitting of the easy withdrawal of the edge of the door from .the groove when the door is opened and its proper engagement-with such V groove when the door 15 again moved to closed position. means for locking the sections 3 and 4 t0- gether when they aremoved to the folded position of Figure 1. This means consists of the .latch bar 16 having the catch 17 and pivoted as'shown in the slot 18 of the section 3. The section 4 has a slot 19 opposite the slot 18 and when the sections 3 and 4 are brought together the catch 17 engages the plate 20 on the section 4. The sections 1 and 2 are locked together by the mechanism shown in Figure 5. The latch bar 21 similar to the bar 16 is secured to the section 1 and engages with the plate 22 on the section 2 in the same manner that the latch bar 16 engages the plate 20 on the section 4. The inner end of the latch bar 21 is provided with the hook 23 which engages the bent rod 24 when the section 1 is moved to the position shown in Figure 1, the bent rod 24 being secured to the door framing.
The modified arrangement shown in F igures 7, 8, 9 and 10 differs from the modification just described, in that the door consists of only the three sections 1, 2, 3 instead of four. The construction also difiers in that the guide stud 13 is differently located with respect to the section 3 than are the studs 13 with respect to the sections 2 and 4, which change in location necessitates a somewhat different arrangement of the inner ends ofthe guide slot 12. The looking bar 25 operates in substantially the same manner as the bar shown in Figure 5, but the construction is so modified that the bar serves to hold all three sections instead of only two. The bar is pivoted to the central Figure 4 illustrates the section 2 and its outer end projects through I one side of the center line of the door with the section 3 and enga es the plate 26 on the outside of such section when the parts are in folded position. The inner end of the bar projects through the section 1. and engages the bent holding bar 27 when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 8.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the t'ol lowing 1. In combination, a door construction comprising an inner hinged section, a second section hinged to the outer edge of the inner section, a third section hinged to the outer edge of the second section, and a pair of slots lyingto one side of the center line of the doorway with which two of the sections; engage and are gulded to folded position when the inner section is swung to open position.
2. In combination, a door construction comprising an inner hinged section, a second section hinged to the outer edge of the inner section to swing in a direction opposite to the direction of swing of the inner section, a third section hinged to the outer edge of the second section to swing in a direction opposite to the direction of swing of the second section, a fourth section hinged to the outer edge of the third section to swing in a direction opposite to the direction of swing of the third section and a pair of slots lying to one side of the center line of the door with which the second and second, third and fourth sections are directed to folded position when the inner section is moved to open position.
3. In combination, a door construction comprising an inner hinged section, a second section hinged to the outer edge of the inner section to swing in a direction opposite to the direction of swing of the inner section, a third section hinged to the outer edge of the second section to swing in a'direction opposite'to the directionof swing of the second section, a fourth section hinged to the outer edge of the third section to swing in a direction opposite to the direction of swing of the third section, and a pair of approximately parallel guide slots lying to which the second and fourth sections ,engage and by which the second, third and fourth sections are directed to folded posi-' tion when the inner section is moved to open position.
4. A hinged door consisting of a plurality of hinged sections alternately folding in opposite directions, together with a plurality of guide slots, lying to one side of the center line of the door-way and engaging means on every other section engaging one of the slots and so arranged that the sections are guided in their movements to open and 1 closed position.
5. A hinged door consisting of a plurality of hinged sections folding upon each other, alined slots in the sections, a catch bar secured to one of the sections and extending through the slots when the sections are folded againsteach other, stationary engaging means mounted adjacent the position occupied by the slots when the sections are folded, means on one end of the catch bar for engaging the stationary means, and means on the other end of the catch bar for engaging and holding the outer section when the sections are in folded position.
6. A door comprising in combination a plurality of sections hinged together in series, and guide means therefor comprising a plurality of overlapping slots of different lengths all lying on the same side of the doors and cooperating means on the sections engaging the slots.
7. A hinged door consisting of a plurality of hinged sections alternately folding in opposite directions together with a plurality of guide slots lying to one side of the center line of the door-way and inclined with respect thereto, and engaging means on alternate sections engaging the slots and so arranged that the sections are guided in their moven'lents to open and closed position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name .in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
JOHN C. DUNER.
