Description
@uitrit tette` @anni @frn .JAMES STEWART, O F MO NEY CREEK, MINNESOTIL Letters Patent No.-70,284, dated October 29, 1867.
-iilge Sibari@ aferra tu iu lgrsc rttets nteut mit mating artt nt tige same.
'TO AALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES STEWART, of Money Creek, in the county of Houston, .and State'ofM'innesota, have invented a new and improved Fastening for Axe and other Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following isla full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art"to make and .use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- VFigure 1 is an end view of an axe with my improved fastening.
Figure 2 represents my improved fastening'applied toan axle-helve. Similar letters of reference indicate like par-ts.
`The ob'ect of this invention is to fasten helves or handles in axes i icks, hammers, &c. for the ur ose of- .l 7 P a P P ysecuring them irmly and permanentlyin the eye thereof, and it consists in attaching ametal plate orstrap on one side or edge of the helve, held in pla-ee by a clip, and7 passing through the eye of an axe or' pick, forms a :screw-bolt, fastened by a nut to a plate over the eye of the axe or pick, ashereinafter morev particularly described. Y l
The letterA represents an ordinary chopping-aire, and B the helve. On theinner edge or side of the helve next the blade an iron strap or plate, C, `is fitted on the helve B, and held to 'it by aelip, D, riveted .to it. The plate C is rounded to form a bolt, a, at the upper en d, passing through the eye of the axe withthe helve. A plate, I), is laid over the eye of the axe, and the bolt passes through it, so that it'serves as a washer for the nut c on the bolt.v A wedge, d, is inserted in the end of the helve, and may either form a part of the plate b or be separate from it. The helve being introduced in the eye of an axe, for example, the bolt a on the strap or plate C, and the bolt e also, are drawn up with the helve, and held firmly by the nuts c c over the washer-plate IJ. This mode of fastening the helve is not only very strong and durable, but the plate C protects the h'elve of an axe at that part Where it is usually worn away by service. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved fastening for axe-'helves and other tool-handles, consisting of a plate, C, attached by a clip, D, and secured 'by a bolt, a', to the handle, in combination with the bolt e and the wedge al, constructed and arranged to operate as herein described. f
.JAMES STEWART.
