IMPROVEMENT IN CURRIERS KNIVES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters YPatent and making part of the same.

To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS A. GIGNAC, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a certain useful new Improved Cura-ying- Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is, a plan or side view of said knife, and

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

The same letters refer to like parts in each of said gures.

In order to get strength in the shanks of carryingknife stocks to resist twisting strains thereat, when using the knife, the shanks thereof have been made in two pieces, by continuing the shanks of both ofthe parts or jaws of the stock through the handlesof the knife and holding y the Shanks together and handles thereon by a nut screwed on. a thread cut around both parts of' the shank. In using currying knives, the blades thereof have frequently to be removed from the stock to be cleaned and oiled to prevent their rusting 'in the stock, and, in the knife-stock above mentioned, it is found inconvenient and troublesome to be obliged so often to remove the handles from the knife-stock, in order to simply clean and oil the griping-faces ofthe stock and the knife-blades and The object of my invention is to construct a curi-yingkuit'e stock, having strong handle-shanks, and in such a manner that the knife-blades may be easily removed therefrom without disturbing the handles; and My invention consists in a new andimproved manner of holding the stock-jaws and blades of a curryingknife together, and in attaching the cross-handle to the knife-stock, so that the holding-jaw is easily removed from the stockjaw to clean the jaws and blades thereof, without disturbing the handles of the knife.

To enable others to make my said improved currying-knife, I will now fully describe its construction, as follows:

The permanent jaw A of the knife-stock is made, at one of its shank-ends, in a hook-like shape, substantially as -shown at E in fig. 2. Said shank is then continued through the handle D, which is permanently secured thereon.

The shank at the other end of said jaw AA is made in a cross-head form, as at' H I I, substantially as shown iuigs. 1 and 2v; and in the cross-head part there is made a recess or socket, a.

The cross-handle C is permanently secured to said cross-head shank by letting the cross-pmt of said shank flush into the handle in manner so that its edge sides are shouldered in the handle, and then rivetingA the handle to said cross-shank by the rivets b b. in manner as shown in iig. 1. The removablel jaw B is made with a tongue, F, atone end, which tits into the hook-like socketv E aforesaid, and it is held therein by the vpin or screw d passing through the tongue and hook.

The other end of the removable jaw, at G, is made in a rounded or slightly tapering shape, so that its end shall it into the socket a, in the cross-shank I I, in

manner substantially as shown in figs. 1 and 2.

The removable jawB is attached to the permanent jaw A by rst slipping its end G into' its socket a, then passing its tongue F into the hook-like groove E, and securing'it therein bythe pin or screw (l. The tightening-screws c c are then put in, and the knifeblades J J slipped into and adjusted in their respective places between the jaws A and B. Then the holdingscrews c are screwed tight, thus causing the jaws to gripe and hold firmly the said blades.

When necessary to remove the jaw B and knifeblades, to clear andoil the gripingfaces of .the jaws and the blades, it is easilyr done, without disturbing the handles D C, by iirst taking out the screws c, then -t-he pin d, when ythe jaw B may be moved out free-of the hook E and socket a, thus, in a convenient manner, enabling the jaw B and knife-blades to be removed, cleaned, and'oiled, to prevent their corrosion by water or moisture.
