SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 698,142, dated April 22, 1902 Application filed June 13, 1901. Serial No. 64,359. (No model.)
drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in buttonhole-cutters, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive cutter whereby changes may readilybe made to adapt the same for cutting buttonholes of various sizes and forms; and it consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the said drawings, where like numerals of reference indicate corresponding-parts in all of the figures, Figure 1 is a longitudinal side View of the cutter, and Fig. 2 is a section through line my of Fig.' l. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail perspective views of parts of the invention.
The implementconsists of scissors-like main portion, comprising jaws'2 and 3, pivotally connected at 4 and having handles 5, with a spring 6 interposed therebetween to keep the jaws normally apart. To the jaw 2 is attached by a thumb-screw 7 and pins 8, which register with holes 9, a blade 10, having two oppositely-disposed cnttingedges 11 and 12, one of which, l1, is straight, while the other, l2, is straight a portion of its length and terminates in an eye 13 for making corresponding incisions in the cloth, as required. The other jaw 3 is of a round cross-section, upon which is loosely mounted, so as to be free to rotate thereon, but prevented from moving endwise therefrom by riveting the end of the plug over a washer 19, a sleeve-die l5, having a plurality of unequally long faces 16, any one of which may be rotated s0 as to be brought directly beneath the operative cutting edge of the aforesaid blade, the length 'of the face which opposes the blade regulating the length ofthe cut in the cloth. Torhold the die to any set position, I provide a plate 26, secured .by a thumb-screw 17 to a fiat surface ou the main portion of the implement and in the same plane as that of one of the said faces of the die, and extending upwardly from this plate is an offset 18, bent at right angles to form a gage-face 19, whereby the buttonholes may be cut to any predetermined distance from the cloth edge, and for this purpose the locking-plate is slotted at 20 for its adjustment, as well as having graduated teeth"2l in the implement-body for engaging with the end of the said plate.
The more important advantages of my invention are the quick manner of making changes, first, as to the blade, which may be changed from a straightslot cutter to a loopedend one, or vice versa, by simply reversing the blade itself and without the necessity of removing the die; second, the changing of the blade-opposing die-face by rotating the die; third, the manner of positively securing the die to its set position, and, fourth, by providing a cloth distance-gage which is rigidly secured to the predetermined distance the buttonholes are to be cut from the cloth edge.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a buttonhole-cutter, the combination with the pivotally-connected handles and the jaws, of a blade having a straight cutting edge and a cutting edge with a straight portion terminating in an eye and disposed oppositely to each other, means to secure said blade to one of the said jaws so that either of the said cutting edges may be moved into and retained in operative position, and a diesleeve having a plurality of faces rotatably mounted permanently upon the other jaw, means to lock the said die-sleeve to any set position, and the cloth-gaging means.
2. In a buttonhole-cutter, the combination sleeve having a plurality of faces rotatably with the pivotally-eonneoted handles and mounted permanently upon the other jaw. Io
