To ctZZ whom, it Duty concern! Be it known that I, HERMAN BLoME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to broom-holders.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction shown in my Patent No. 658,616,.dated September 25, 1900, by producing a device the parts of which are less expensive of manufacture and more readily removable.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a front view of my improved broom-holder, showing in full lines the position the parts assume when not in use and in dotted lines the position the parts assume when the device is in use, the broom-handle also being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hinge-plate removed. Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, of the hinge-plate. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the base-plate.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the base-plate, which may be of any suitable shape or design and is provided with two sets of lugs 23 and 3. The logs 3 of each set are formed with apertures, While the lugs 2 of each set are formed with slots.
4 denotes the hinge-plate, which is pivoted to the base-plate at 5, and 6 denotes a spring which is interposed between the two plates and exerts its energy to force outwardly the lower end of the hinge-plate. The hingeplate is provided with laterally-projecting pins or studs 7.
8 denotes arms having trunnions 9, the trunnions of each arm engaging the apertures and slots of one set of the lugs 2 and 3.
1O denotes slot-ted extensions secured to or formed integral with the arms, and into the slots of these extensions project the studs 7 of the hinge-plate.
To secure the inner ends of the trunnions 9 onthe arm-pieces 8 against any possibility of slipping out of the slotted lugs 2, I provide rearwardly-projecting fingers 12, formed integral with the hinge-plate at and adapted to hear at all times upon the under side of the said inner ends of the trunnions 9 and hold the same in place.
WVhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3 and the handle of a broom placed against the hinge-plate, its lower end willbe forced inward and its studs, working in the curved slotted extensions of the arms, will force said arms down and about the broomhandle, thus securely holding it in position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The instant the broom-handle is removed the plate will be thrown outwardly by the spring 6, thus elevating the arms, so that they will not project laterally and be in the way.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pattent, is-
The combination with a base-plate, of a spring-actuated hinge-plate provided with laterally-projecting studs and rearwardlyprojecting fingers, arms pivoted to the baseplate and provided with slotted extensions into which the studs of the hinge-plate project and by means of which when the hingeplate is'depressed said arms will be swung downwardly, substantially as set forth.
