M US'lC-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 743,678, dated November 10, 1903.
Application filed June 22, 1903- Serial No. 162,672. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY KATE BEAR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Moun t Morris, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Music- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding books, sheet-music, and similar articles in open position, and has for its object to simplify and improve devices of this class .and to produce a device which may be cheaply constructed, easily applied and operated, and which will not interfere with the ordinary uses of the book.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointedout in the appended claims, itbeing understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation.
The improved device comprises a base member 10, extended laterally and having a standard 11 projecting vertically therefrom and connected therewith by a spring hingejoint 12 to permit the standard to swing relative to the base member. The hinge 12 is constructed to operate with considerable friction to hold the standard and the base in their adjusted positions, and which requires the exertion of force to move it to change the positions of these members. The standard is composed of two sections 13 and let, slidable longitudinally on each other and provided with a clamp for locking them in adjusted position. This clamp comprises spaced ears 16, carried by the upper section 14, which embrace the section 13 and form a guide therefor. Between the cars 16 a cam-lever 17 is pivoted and operates upon the outer face of the section 13 between the ears to lock the sections together at any desired point.
Connected by one leg to the upper end of back of a the section 14 is an approximately U-shaped clip-arm 19, carrying at its free end a laterally-extended member 21', arranged to clamp the leaves of a book to be supported. The clip-arm is joined to the head of the section 14 by a spring-joint 18, for a purpose hereinafter described. The upper section is also provided with a cross-plate 15, secured thereto near its upper'end in alinement with the laterally-extended member 21 of the cliparm, the cross-plate being designed to pass behind the book and the clip-arm in front thereof to clamp it firmly 1 between them. The clip -arm 19 will be made sufticiently large and provided with a suflicient range of movement to embrace the largest books or other articles to be supported,'and the sections 13 and 14: are so proportioned that when extended the cross-plate 15 will support the largest book or other article and when collapsed will be adapted to the smallest book.
Additional holding means are provided for use when desired or necessary, and they comprise arms 22 23, movably connected with the base member 10 by rivets and having studs 24 25, adapted to extend in advance of the lower edges of the leaves of a book to assist in holding them open. By swinging upon their pivots the arms may be adapted to the number of leaves to be supported.
I claim as my invention- 1. A book-holder comprising a laterallyextended base member having a telescopic standard extending vertically therefrom, a head carried by the upper section of said standard and having a laterally-extended cross-plate adapted for engagement with the book or other article to be supported, and a spring-supported clip extending from said head member and adapted for yield ablriI engagement with the open leaves of the boo 2. A book-holder comprising a laterally-extended base member having a sectional standard extending vertically therefrom and connected movably therewith, a head member formed on the upper section of said standard and provided with a cross-plate extended on opposite sides of said standard and adapted to support the back of a book or other article, and a spring-supported clip connected with said head member and laterally extended to support the open leaves of a book, and means for locking said sections in adjusted position.
3. A book-holder comprising a laterally-extended base member having a standard extending vertically therefrom and connected movably therewith, said standard being composed of sections, a head member formed on the upper section and provided with a laterally-extendingcross-plate adapted to support the rear side of an article to be held, one of said sections having spaced ears embracing the other section,a cam-lever movably mounted between said ears and operating to lock said sections together, and means connected with said head for engaging the front side of the article supported.
4. A book-holder comprising a base memher having a sectional standard extending vertically therefrom,-a head member carried by the upper section of said standard and havinga laterally-extended cross-plate adapted for engagement with the back of a book,
means for adjustably locking said sections together, and a spring-supported clip-arm extending upwardly from said head member, thence bent downwardly in advance thereof and provided with a member extending laterally on opposite sides thereof for yieldable contact with the open leaves of a book.
5. A book-holder comprising a base member having a telescopic standard extending vertically therefrom,'a head member attached to one of said sections and having a laterallyextended cross-plate, a spring-supported clip extending from said head member and adapted for yieldable contact with the open leaves of a book, and spaced arms movably attached to said base member and provided with vertical studs at their free ends adapted to support the lower edges of the book-leaves.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY K. BEAR.
