SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,501, dated January 3 1894. Application filed March 27,1893. Serial No. 467,722. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. GOOD- nion and JAMES M. MERRITT, citizens of the Unlted States, residing at Homer, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wick-Fasteners; and we declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1o 1n the art to which it appertains 'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a new and useful I 5 improvement in a wick fastener for an oil burner, having for its object a device of superlor efficiency, economy and durability, and one whereby a wick may be removed and replaced in a simple, easy and expeditious mannor.
To these ends our improved fastener consists of the devices and appliances, their construction, combination and arrangement as hereinafter specified and claimed, and illusz 5 trated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing our improved fastener applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fastener. Fig. 3 is a 0 cross section through the clamping band, showing the fastening in closed position. Fig. 4 1s a similar view, showing the fastening in open position.
We carry out our invention as follows:
5 A represents the ordinary Wick tube, and
B the usual wick raiser sleeve located thereupon.
0 denotes the wick.
Our improved wick fastener consists, cs-
sentially, of a clamping band D surrounding the wick. With the extremities of the band 1s engaged a hinge or butt E, the plates or leaves E and E of which are jointed together, as at e, and with the two ends of said band 5 as shown at e, e
F denotes a clamp constructed with clamping jaws F and F constructed to embrace the outer surfaces of the two leaves E, E to force them together into position shown in Fig. 3, and to be retracted therefrom to allow the said leaves to open, as shown in Fig. 4. It is obvious that when the hinge or butt E is closed, the band D is clamped upon the wick to bind it upon the sleeve 13. So also when the hinge is open, the bandD is released from the Wick.
To conveniently operate the clamp F and to hold it in engagement with the other parts of the fastening device, the clamp is constructed with an arm F pivotally engaged 6 with one of the jaws, as shown at f.
In Fig. 2, the full lines show the upright position of the clamp when the jaws are closed upon the hinge, while the dotted lines show the position of the clamp when released 6 from the hinge.
G denotes a toothed wick raiser arm engaged with the clamp F, serving to operate the clamp as well as the usual purpose of such a notched or toothed bar in connection with the customary pinion on the wick raiser handle, the pinion and handle not needing to be shown herewith.
It will be evident that such a wick fastening device is simple, economical, easily operated, and of superior efficiency.
We do not limit ourselves to the exact construction of parts shown and described herewith, as our invention contemplates any jointed or hinged-leaved connection of the two ex- 8: tremities of the clamping band, whereby the two ends of said band can be advanced. one toward the other and vice versa.
What we claim as our invention is.
1. In a wick fastener, the combination of a clamping band, a hinge or butt E having leaves E and E jointedly connected at their adjacent edges, said leaves at their opposite edgeshaving a jointed connection with the extremities of said band, and means to force said leaves face to face to contract the diameter of the band, substantially as described.
2. In a wick fastener, the combination of a clamping band, a hinge or butt E having leaves E and E jointedly connected at their 9 5 adjacent edges, said leaves at their opposite edges having a jointed connection with the extremities of said band, and a clamp F constructed with clamping jaws F and F to embrace the outer su rfaces of said leaves to force them one toward another to contract the diameter of the band, substantially as described.
3. In a wick fastener, the combination of a clamping band, a hinge or butt E having leaves E and E jointedly connected at their adjacent edges, said leaves at their opposite edges having a jointed connection with the extremities of said band, and a clamp F constructed with clamping jaws F and F to embrace the outer surfaces of said leaves to force them one toward another to contract the diameter of the band, said clamp provided with a toothed Wick raiser bar connected therewith, substantially as described.
4 In a wick fastener, the combination of a clamping band, a hinge or butt E having leaves E and E jointedly connected at their adjacent edges, said leaves at their opposite edges having a jointed connection with the extremities of said band, and a clamp F constructed with clamping jaws F and F to embrace the outer surfaces of said leaves to force them one toward another to contract the diameter of the band, said clamp F having a pivotal connection with one of said leaves, substantially as described.
