UNITED STATES PATENT5 OFFICE.
JAMES JOHNSON, onANTwnRP, wYoRK;
CLOTHES-LINE" ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,397, dated March 1 1; 1902.
Application filed llovemberlii, 1901- Serial No. 82,532. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES JOHNSON, a
citizen of the United. States, residing at Antwerp, in the. county of Jefierson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Line Attachment, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in clothes-line attachments, and particularly to what is known as the pulley clothes-linethat is, an endless line suspended upon pul leys; and the object of my improvement is to provide a device capable of ready attachment to the line to prevent sagging thereof and also to prevent'the lines from separating after the clothes are hung thereon." My invention also provides an arrangement whereby the weight will equally rest upon both lines; and with these and other objects in-view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and novel combinationjo'f parts, as will be more fully referred to in the following specification, referencebeing had to the'drawings, in which-.-
, Figure 1 represents myinvention as applied to clothes-lines. Fig. 2 is aperspective view of one side of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the opposite side. a detail section taken about on the line 4; 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 6 is a detail section about on theline 6 6 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 isa section on the line 7 7. of Fig. 4.
In the drawings 1 have illustrated my in vention as applied to a clothes-line th atis suspended between two posts; but it will of course be understood that the device is also applicable to lines suspended from windows to posts, which aremore often found in lines of the character In carrying out mylinventionl em ploya horizontal portion A, that is provided at its center with a vertica1ly extending post B, that isprovided'with a slot Bfwhich may extend to. any'suitabledistance lengthwise of the post that may be found most practicable, one
side of the post being cut away to form an entrance to the slot, as shown at B The horizontal member is provided upon opposite sides thereof with obliquely-arranged recesses Fig." 4 isknown as pulley? clothes G,whose lower ends merge into grooves O,that extend to the ends of the said member. The upper ends of the recesses also merge into a groove C that extends along the central portion of the member A and nnitesthe said re cesses, as shown. In practice the line is in* sorted in one of thereoessesO, withone end resting in groove C and the opposite end extending lengthwise in the groove 0 and is then inserted in the other slot 0 of the opposite end of the horizontal member and is held in-the oppositegroove 0. The line is then passed around the pulleys that are secured to thepostspwith its upper strand resting in the slot B of the vertical post B. By this arrangement it willbe readily seen that I proline'without removing the same'from the pulleys and also even'after the clothes mayhave been placed upon'the' line.
In orderj that the. device may be positively held imposition upon the line, I provide a turn-button D, that is held tothe horizontal memberA bymeans ofa screw or nail D'.. This. device is intended to extend up along 85,
side the post B to close the "entranceto the 1 From'thei foregoing theadvantagesof my improvement will readilya v skilled'in the art to which it appertaing, I M
what I claim as new," and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is--; Y
Having'thus'fully described my invention,-
, 1. A device of thekind described compris 3 3 ing; a horizontal member having obliquelyarranged recesses formed therein, the lower. ends of which terminate in grooves-extendj ing to the ends thereof, and the" upper ends-1yv beingconnected by a grooveform'ed in-theupper face of the horizontal member and a; post projecting from the horizontal member; and having a slot arranged therein, one side; I of the said post being cutaway to provide an entrance to the slot and means for closing the arranged recesses produced in the ends there said entrance substantially as shown and deof, that extend from the top to the bottom of 15 scribed. the said member, and a slotted post project- 2. A device of the kind described comprising from the said'horizontal member, one side 5 ing the horizontal member having recesses of the said post being cut away to form an arranged in the ends and upon opposite sides entrance to the said slot, and a turn-button thereof, a slotted post projecting from the for closing the slot, substantially as shown 20 said horizontal member and having an enand described.
trance formed therein to the slot and means 10 for closing the said entrance, shbstantiall JAMES JOHNSON as shown and described. Witnesses:
3. A device of the kind described, compris- CHAS. WV. HALL,
