GLOAK RACK.

WITNESSES /N VENT0/? ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK WOLF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOAK-RAC K.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,833, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed March 1, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WoLn, of the city, county, and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloak- Racks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cloakrack of that class which is used in salesrooms for suspending cloaks from movable hangers, said cloak-rack being so constructed that the cloaks can be readily removed fromthe hangers and be replaced on the same without detaching the hangers from, the rack, whereby the exhibiting and handling of the cloaks by the salesman is considerably facilitated; and the invention consists of a cloakrack formed of upright standards and a horizontal supporting-rail provided with a groove of dovetailed shape, in which the rollers of the cloak-hangers are supported, and which permits the swinging of the hangers in inclined position, so as to permit the removing or replacing of the cloaks without requiring the removing of the hangers from the rack.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of myimproved cloak-rack; and Fig. 2 is avertical transverse section of the supporting-rail of the same, drawn on a larger scale, said figure showing in full lines the position of the cloak-hanger when suspended from the bar and in dotted lines the position of the hanger when in the act of removing or replacing a cloak.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the horizontal supporting-rail of my improved cloak-rack, which rail is supported in the usual manner by upright standards B, having braces at their lower ends. The horizontal supporting-rail A is provided with a longitudinal groove a of dovetailed cross -section, which groove serves for the purpose of guiding the supporting-rollers d of the cloak-hangers D on said rail, and also for permitting the swinging of the cloak-hangers on the supporting-rail, so as to place the same into an inclined position and permit the convenient removing or replacing of the cloaks without removing the hangers from the supporting-rail. Then the hanger is placed in an inclined position, the
Serial No. 342,243. (No model.)
roller cl assumes an inclined position in the dovetailed groove a, and is retained in this position by its contact with one side of the groove and with the opposite upper edge of the same, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The dovetailed shape of the groove permits the cloak-hanger D to be moved on the bar A in either direction, according as the cloak is to be placed on the hanger from one side or the other. By the dovetailed groove the jumping of the rail by the roller and the consequent detaching of the cloak-hanger are prevented.
By a cloak-rack with a supporting-rail o the construction described the han dling', showin g, and replacing of the cloaks are facilitated without requiring the removing or replacing of the hangers, which is accomplished with considerable inconvenience and loss of time. WVhen the hanger is placed into an inclined position, the cloak is first removed from the higher part of the hanger, upon which it will slip off readily from the lower part of the hanger by its own weight, while in replacing the cloak that part which is to be placed on the higher end of the hanger is first placed in position, and then the remaining part placed on the lower end of the same, upon which the hanger is permitted to assume a vertical position onthe supporting-rail.
When the cloak is to be exhibited to a purchaser, it is removed with the hanger, the latter being supported by the handle, and thus readily removed and replaced at any point of the rail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the horizontal supporting-rail of a cloak-rack, said rail having a longitudinal groove of dovetailed cross-section, of a cloak-hanger having an anti-fric- \tion roller guided in said groove, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK WOLF. Witnesses:
