Description

J. G. MADLAND.
CLOTHES HANGER. APPLICATION 1 11.21) 1017.13, 1907.
Patented Dec. 29, 1908.
INVENTO'H .s' G: BY
ATTORNEYS UNITED srarns PATENT orrron.
JENS G. MADLAND, OF PORT ANGELES, WASHINGTON.
CLOTHES-HANGER.
Application filed November 13, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENs G. MADLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Angeles, in the county of Clallam and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Hangers of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a clothes reel or rack having revoluble action and which can be dropped down to be loaded or unloaded, and which can be readily carried up and secured in an upright position for drying purposes.
Another purpose of the invention is to construct an article of the character mentioned in a simple, durable and economic manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device; and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through the upper portion of the device, showing the pivotal connection between the standard or supporting section and the clothes carrying section.
' A supporting section or standard A of any suitable shape has pivoted to the upper end thereof, a clothes carrying section B. The standard A is provided in its upper end with a recess whose inner or bottom wall 11 is curved on the arc of a circle whose center is the point of pivotal connection 17 of the section, and the lower end of the clothes carrying section is also curved as at 15 on the arc of the same circle, the curved portion of the clothes carrying section being of greater length than the curved portion of the standard. At each end of the said curved portions shoulders are provided 12 and r for the portion 11, and 12 and 16 for the portion 15, which act as stops by their engagement with each other to permit a limited swinging movement of the sections with respect to each other.
It will be observed that the clothes carrying section B may be carried down to a greater or lesser degree so as to permit the said clothes carrying section to be loaded or Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1908.
Serial No. 401,959.
unloaded in a convenient manner, and that the said clothes carrying section B may be as conveniently and expeditiously carried to an upright position for drying purposes, and when the clothes carrying section B is in its upright position it can be so held by means of a cam lever 18, pivotally connected with the side face of the standard A by links 18*, the cam surface of the lever being adapted for engagement with the lip 16 to hold the end portion 14 of the body of the drier perpendicular, when the lever is pressed down, as is shown in Fig. 1.
In the detail construction of the clothes carrying section B, upwardly inclined radial arms 19 are provided that extend from a spider 20 mounted to turn upon the body portion 13, as is illustrated in Fig. 1, and supporting or brace arms 21 are also provided, located above the arms 19 and attached thereto at their outer ends, and the inner ends of the supporting or brace arms 21 are attached to an upper spider 22, mounted to turn upon the reduced upper portion 23 of the body member 13 of the said supporting section B. Clothes lines 24 are carried from one lower arm 19 to the other in series, in any suitable or approved manner, and the lower portion of the standard A is suitably shaped to enter the ground.
The shoulder or wall 12 at the upper portion of the depending circular wall 11 serves to limit the movement of the clothes supporting section in one direction and the lip 16 limits the movement of the said clothes supporting section in the opposite direction, but the movement in both directions is suiiicient to bring the ropes 24 within convenient reach of the person placing clothes upon the device or removing clothes therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a clothes hanger, a supporting section and a clothes carrying section pivoted thereto, the supporting section having a recess in its upper end whose inner wall is curved on the arc of a circle whose center is the point of pivotal connection of the two sections, and being provided with a stop at each end of the curved section, the clothes carrying section having its end curved to fit the curved wall, the curved portion being provided at each end with a shoulder for engag ing the adjacent stop, the curved portion of handle pivoted between the supports for 10 the clothes carrying section being of greater engaging the clothes supporting section. length than the curved portion of the sup- 1n testimony whereof I have signed my porting section whereby to permit a limited name to this specification in the presence of movement of the sections with respect to two subscribing witnesses.
each other, and means for locking the section J EN S G. MADLAND. in alinement with each other, said means Witnesses: comprising supports connected to the sup- GEO. V. SMITH,
porting section, and a cam provided with a J. E. COOHRAN.
