MEDICINE-SPOON.

SPECIFICATION forming parl: of Letters Patent No. 350,499, dated October 12, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, WILLIAM R. No, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spoons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to spoons, especially such as are used for administering medicines; and it hasfor its object to providea spoon with novel and efficient means for drawing a cork from a medicine or other bottle, in order thatv a part of the contents thereof can be poured v into the spoon.

To such end the invention conslstsin a spoon having a shank or handle, to the end of which is pivoted or hinged a corkscrew which can be turned or swung laterally or into or toward the bowl of the spoon. `The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a perspective view showing the spoon provided with one formV of corkscrew according to my invention; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, similar view's showing modifications. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a bottle having the spoon connected with the cork by the corkscrew, and Fig. 6 a detailed perspective View of the cork having the spoon and corkscrew connected therewith.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings. where- The numeral l indicates the bowl of a spoon, such as is used for administering medicine and for other purposes. The shank or handle 2 of the spoon-bowl carries at its outer end a corkscrew, 3, which may be of Wire formed into a ring, 4, around which the end of the shank or handle is bent, as'at 5, to constitute a pivotal attachment, as in Figs. l, 4, 5, and 6, for permitting the corkscrew to be turned laterally, or be swung around in the direction of the spoon-bowl, to rest upon either the upper'or lower side of the'shank or handle 2.

outer end of the short shank or handle of the spoon-bowl is bifurcated to form two separated lips,6,through which passes a pin or rivet, 7, the end of the corkscrew being bent around such pin or rivet, as at 8, thus permitting the corkscrew to be turned around toward or to rest against the edge of the shank or'handle of the spoon-bowl.

In Fig. 3 the shank or handle is provided directly at its base end with two lugs, l1, between which one end of the corkscrew is pivoted, as at I2, thereby permitting the corkscrew to fold around into the spoon-bowl.

The spoonbowl may constitute a means whereby the corkscrew can be inserted into a cork,and the corkscrew may serve, in whole or in part, as a 'handle when the spoon is being used. I

In Fig. 5 I illustrate a medicine-bottle having the corkscrew inserted into the cork and the spoon hanging downward. The co rkscrew and spoon, being of cheap and simple construction, may be given gratuitously to a person purchasing a bottle of medicine or other substance. The spoon, as shown in Figs.Y 5 and 6, is pivotally connected with the cork by means of the corkscrew, and serves as a grasping-handle in withdrawing the cork,and

then as a medium for administering the contents of the bottle. Thus the spoon may constitute a permanent attachment to thecork of the bottle, and thereby be always conveniently at hand when required for use.

In the several forms shown there is a pivotal attachment of the corkscrew with the spoonbowl, and the latter constitutes a handle for inserting the corkscrew into a 'cork and withdrawing the latter, while the corkscrew serves, in whole or in part, as a handle to the'spoon-bowl in using the latter tol administer medicine or for other purposes.
