UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREl/V ALTMAN, OF ELIZABETH, JERSEY.
CAN-OPENER.
SI'EGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,653, dated November 8, 1898.
Application filed August 2, 1 97- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW ALTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which ticularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a can-opener and corkscrew in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section showing the receptacle in which the tools not in use are carried. Fig. 3 is a partial section illustrating the manner of securing the tools to the holder.
Like letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the various figures.
A indicates the universal handle, within one end of which is formed a tool-receptacle or, arranged to carry within it the implements to be employed therewith. This receptacle is inclosed by means of the swinging door B, which is pivoted at its inner end uponascrew a and is arranged when in position over the receptacle to swing below the edges thereof, thus forming a secure means by which the door is held from disengagement. At a a notch is provided in the end wall of the re ceptacle to permit a small instrument to be inserted in under the edge of the cover, where'- by it is raised out of the recess to be swung sidewise upon its pivot, by which access may be had to the receptacle.
Suitably located at the opposite end of the holder are a number of pockets b, c, and d, adapted to receive and engage the tools, wherein they are held in position for use.
Serial No. 646,787. (No model.)
The pockets 1) and c extend through the holder from side to side and at right angles to the long axis thereof, while the pocket cl is formed in the extreme outer end opposite the tool-receptacle and at right angles to the pockets 6 and c. The shanks of the tools and pockets within which they are engaged are preferably made somewhat tapering and rectangular in cross-section, so that when they are united the tool will be brought to a firm rigid seat and held from all lateral motion.
Upon one side of the holder, at that end in which the pockets are formed, there is a double spring-catch O, secured atits middle point by means of the screw e and provided at its free end with locking-pins f g to engage through the holes hand j, which are arranged to enter the tool-pockets b and d at their edges, and as the shanks of the tools are provided with notches at Zto register with these holes the pins f g are forced into engagement therewith, thus securely locking the tools in position.
In Fig. 1 the holder is shown as fitted with a can-opening tool, consisting of a cuttingknife m and a tool '11, which is provided with a pointed end to penetrate the can,and a rightangled portion at m to form a pivot upon which the holder is turned in the process of opening said can. in the pocket 0, which intersects the pocket cl, by providing in its shank a hole or recess 19, and upon the inner end of the tool 0?. 2. lug 19, so that when the tools are inserted in theirrespective pockets the lug and hole engage, and as the pin g upon the outer end of the spring 0 drops into the notch l in the shank of the tool at the parts are securelylocked together.
It will be obvious that some slight modifications may be made in the general construction and arrangement of my improved tool without materially afiectin'g the results, and I desire to have it understood that while I have preferred to illustrate my invention in connection with the particular class of implements herein shown and described I do not desire to limit myself thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a canopener, comprising a handle, in one end of This cutting-knife is held which pockets are formed, one of said pockets lying in axial line with said handle, the other of said pockets intersecting at right angles the first-named pocket,can-opening tools, comprising a centering pivot-point and an opening-blade held within said pockets, the opening-blade adapted to secure the centering-point in place in the handle, and a springcompressed pin adapted to hold the blade in place, substantially as described. :0
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ANDREW ALTMAN.
