Description
H. G. JONES.
SLIDING GATE HANGER.
APPLICATION r1150 MAY19.19I6.
1,218,869. Patented Mar, 13, 1917.
HUGH aromas, or GLEN, COLORADO.
SLIDING-GATE HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent ed Mar. 13, 1917.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,629.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH G. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen, in the county of Washington, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Gate Hangers;-
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a sliding gate hanger.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved device by means of which a gate may be slidably and hingedly mounted so that the gate may be slid so as to be supported at an intermediate point before it is swung about its hinge.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it may be applied to a gate when the latter is being built or so that it may be readily applied to a gate which has been previously built.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as my description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a device I constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same supporting a gate, only a portion of the latter belng shown however;
Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, the gate being shown in section, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the manner in which the side guide bars are mounted.
In the drawing, I have illustrated a gate post 1 and a gate which comprises a plurality of horizontal boards 2. In order that this gate may be supported slidably and hingedly on the post 1, I have secured a bracket 3 to the post by means of suitable fasteners 4, which bracket is provided with a pair of horizontally extending spaced arms 5 having holes in the ends thereof. Extending through the holes in these arms 5 are bolts 6 on which plates 7 are mounted, which plates are held in spaced relation to the arms by collars or washers 8. A pair of spaced guide bars 9 extend between these plates 7 and are provided with inwardly turned tongues 10 which bear against the plates and by means of which the guide bars are secured in place. Bolts 11 pass through the plates 7 and the inwardly turned tongues 10 and are removable therefrom so that the guide bars may be removed and replaced at will. A roller 12 is mounted between the guide bars 9 adjacent to the lower ends thereof and is adapted to support the upper board 2 of the gate. The plates 7 and the guide bars 9 are arranged on the bolts 6 so that they may be rotated on the same as a vertical pivot. With this arrangement the gate may be first moved slidably on the roller 12 until it is supported at its middle point, and may then be swung about the bolts 6, as a pivot, to an open position. The advantage of this arrangement is of course that the strain on the gate will be relieved inasmuch as it will be supported at its intermediate point rather than at one end.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple device for supporting a gate in the manner described, which device is so constructed that it may be applied to a gate which is already made or applied to one which is being constructed. Furthermore the device will be cheap to manufacture and is constructed of few parts so that it will not readily become inoperative.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: 7
In a gate hanger, the combination with a bracket having a pair of spaced parallel arms, of plates rotatably mounted on said In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, 1n the presence of two WIT/1165868.
HUGH G. JONES.
arms, Washers for spacing the plates from the arms, guide bars having tongues engaging the faces of the plates, bolts for removably securing the guide bars to the plates and a roller mounted between the guide bars and adjacent the lower ends of the same.
