UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TROUSERS HANGER AND PRESS- Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed April 27, 1906. Serial No. 314,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEoReE F. LOUYS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Rutledge, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Trousers Hangers and Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a trousers hanger and nose of a cheap and simple character and which can be readily adapted for the reception and proper retention of trousers made from either light or heavy cloth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trousers hanger and press constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of thesame, showing a pair of trousers applied to and held therein. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the trousers hanger and press with the parts disposed as for the reception and retention of a pair of trousers made from heavy cloth. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the parts disposed as for the reception and retention of a pair of trousers made from lighter cloth. Fig. 5 is a sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention, and Fig. 6 is a plan view illustrating another modification of the same.
The combined hanger and press consists of a pair of opposite end pieces 1 and 2, a back board 3, and a front board 4, the back board being rigidly secured at its opposite ends to the end pieces 1 and 2 and being provided, by preference, with a suspension-hook 5, as shown in Fig. 1. The front board 4, however, is rabbeted at the ends, as shown at 6, the rabbets engaging, but being susceptible of sliding freely, in grooves 7 formed in the inner sides of the opposite end pieces 1 and 2, these grooves 7 being inclined in respect to the plane of the back board 3, so as to be closer to the same at the bottom than atthe top. Hence any downward sliding movement of the front board 4 in the grooves tends to direct it toward the back board 3, and thereby to cause the firm clamping between the two of the legs of a pair of trousers inserted between them, the firmness of the grip being proportionate to the strain or pull upon the trousers, and hence effectually preventing the release of the latter from the clamp.
The rabbets 6, formed at the ends of the front bar 4 of the hanger, are adjacent to one face of the same. Hence if the front board is inserted in the end. pieces, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a space of maximum width is pro vided between the front and back boards, so as to receive and retain the legs of a pair of trousers made from heavy cloth; but if the front board is reversed, as shown in Fig. 4, the width of said space intervening between the front and back boards is reduced to the ex tent of the shoulder of the rabbet, and the hanger is then adapted for the reception and retention of the legs of a pair of trousers made from lighter cloth.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modification of my invention in which the fixed back board of the hanger is inclined in respect to a vertical plane and the sliding front board is vertical, the operation of the hanger, however, being substantially the'same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 a tenon 9 on the end piece 2 engages a mortise in the end of the front board 4, said mortise being closer to one face of the board than to the other, so as to adapt the hanger for the retention of trousers of either light or heavy cloth.
I claim 1. A trousers hanger and press consisting of opposite end pieces having grooves, a back board fixed to said end pieces, and a front board having rabbeted ends slidably engaging the grooves in the end pieces, the lines of the grooves being inclined with respect to the plane of the inner face of the back board, substantially as specified.
2. A trousers hanger and press comprising opposite end pieces, a fixed back board, and a sliding front board having rabbeted ends adapted to grooves in the end pieces, which grooves are inclined in respect to the plane of the inner face of the back board, said sliding front board being reversible so as to vary the width of the space between the same and the back board, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE F. LOUYS.
