Be it known that I, IVILLIAM KIRKPATRIOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Furniture; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a horizontal cross-section of my invention with drawer removed. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the manner of securing the front rails B. Fig. 4 illustrates the corner-joint in perspective View. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 illustrate the same joint with parts detached.

The invention has relation to certainnew and useful improvements in furnituresuch as dressers, bureaus, sideboards, chiffonniers, &c. and is designed to provide fora strong and durable construction whereby a considerable saving is effected both in materials and labor.

IVith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A designates the two front uprights or posts of a dresser or similar article of furniture, and H the two rear uprights or posts thereof. The front posts are longitudinally rabbeted at a.

0 represents transverse end rails having tenons 0 designed to be received into the inner vertical grooves m in the front and rear posts. These posts are also provided with outer vertical grooves it to receive the edges of the end board or finished end wall D. The grooves m are offset from the rabbets a. Each rear post is grooved in its lateral inside wall in the rear portions thereof, as shown at (Z, to receive the tenons of the back rails G, which extend horizontally between the rear posts.

The end rails C are provided with horizontal mortise-slots which are designed to be located just in rear of the rear faces of the front posts A.

B represents the front rails, which extend horizontally between the front posts and are provided with broad horizontal extensiontongues Z), adapted to be passed through the mortise-slots a of the end rails and to be drawn to firm position by means of wedge-keys f, which engage seats lcof said tongues. When firmly keyed in position, the shoulders of the front railB are brought into bracing contact with the inner surfaces of the end rails C, and the projecting portions of the tongues b are brought against the rear surfaces of the front posts, thereby giving the structure firmness and stability.

The front rail B is of broad form from front to back, having a front rabbet m, in which the lower marginal portion of the front wall of the drawer rests when closed. It is also provided with a strong body portion from which the tongues 6 project at the ends. This body portion also supports the drawer trackbars E, which are also secured by the engagement of their lateral tenons a with seats .9 in the end rails O.

The track-bars E are designed to have concave track-grooves t in their upper surfaces, adapted to provide an easy engagement with the convex bearing edges 2 of the sides 1) of the drawers Z. In this manner it is designed to provide a structure which can be easily adjusted to the size of the drawers. The longitudinal grooves in the posts permit the front rails and end rails to be moved up or down to suit the depth of the drawers, and the tongues on the front rails or drawer-guides engaging the mortises of the end rails permit the posts to be adjusted parallel with the sides of the drawers. By means of the wedge-keys the posts can be drawn together properly to fit the drawers, so that they will not bind. The casing is in this way designed to be fitted to the drawers, avoiding the labor of fitting the latter to the casing in the ordinary way. The structure is useful as a knockdown casing which can be readily packed in small compass for transportation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an article of furniture of the character described, the combination with verticallygrooved front and rear posts, and back rails, of slotted end rails having tenons slidably engaging the grooves of said posts, and front rails having slotted extension-tongues, engaging the slots of the end rails, and keys for securing said tongues.

2. In an article of furniture of the character described, the combination with rabbeted front posts having vertical grooves,o1fset from their rabbets, vertically-grooved rear posts,

and back rails, of slotted end rails havingv tenons, front rails having extension-tongues passing through the slots of the end rails, and means for keying the tongues to said end rails.

3. In an article of furniture of the character described, the front post having a longitudinal corner-rabbet provided with an offset groove, in combination With a slotted end rail engaging the rabbet and having a tenon engaging said groove, and a front rail having an extension-tongue adapted to pass through the slot of said end rail and engage the rear surface of the front post, and means for securing said tongue to said end rail.
