Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD J. KEPPnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in China-Closets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in china closets, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of timbers, an improved assemblage of the same, and improved means securing the timbers together, whereby a closet of this type is formed which is extremely strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyin drawings: Figure 1, is a perspective View i lustrating the framework of my improved china closet. Fig. 2, is a view in horizontal section through the completed closet. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of one corner of the closet. Fig. 4, is a view at right angles to Fig. 3. Flg. 5, is a broken view partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating the manner of connecting one of the front upright bars with the top and bottom of the closet. Fig. 6, is a view at right angles to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary plan View of one end of the bottom of the closet,and Fig. 8, is a view in horizontal section of the lower portion of one corner of the closet.

1, represents the top, and 2 the bottom of my improved china closet, which are connected at the rear corners by vertical bars 3 and 4, bars 3 being located at the rear and bars 4 at the sides, as will be more fully hereinafter described.

The bottom 2 is supported above the floor on suitable feet 5. Each foot 5 is made with a dove-tailed tenon 6 adapted to enter a dove-tailed mortise 7 in the bottom. This dove-tailed mortise forms the continuation of a straight groove or mortise 8, the latter serving as an entrance for the dove-tailed tenon 6, and when said tenon is in the groove or mortise 8, and is moved longitudinally of said groove or mortise, it will move into the dove-tailed portion 7 of the mortise, and

'will be securely fixed. For convenience of description, this particular form of combined straight and dove-tailed mortise, which is one of the features of my invention, will be hereinafter referred to as com bined straight and dove-tailed mortise, and the particular description above with the reference to'the same, will apply alike to others hereinafter mentioned.

The side uprights ll: at the corners of the closet are e: :11 provided with tenons 9, which enter in mortises 10 in top 1 and bottom 2, said mortises extending to the rear edges of said top and bottom, while the bars 3 are secured against the rear edges of the top and bottom, and the rear feet 5 are recessed to accommodate the lower portion of uprights 3, which extend to the lower face of the feet, and are shaped to conform to the feet, and are secured to the feet. These uprights 3 therefore serve not. only as connecting devices between the top and the bottom, but also as strengthenil'ig members for the feet, insuring a rigid support for the closet.

Horizontal bars .11, and. 12, are secured to the uprights 3, adjacent the top and bottom 1, and 2, respectively, and said uprights 3 are rabbcted at their edges as illustrated at 17, for the accoimnodation of strips 1.4L forming the backing of the closet. Front uprights l3 connect the top and bottom 1, and 2, and are interlocked with the said top and bottom by means of the same form of dove-tailed tenon and combined mortise, as above set forth.

Between the uprights 13 and the bars 1, curved bars 14 are secured, and all of these bars are rabbeted for the reception of glass panels 15, while between the uprights 13, a door 16 is secured, and a curved bar 17 se cured between said uprights 13 at their upper ends forming-a neat finish to the closet. Suitable shelves 18 are supported in the closet and secured to the rear corner bars 3 and 41, in any approved manner.

This invention is in no wise limited to the particular design of closet illustrated, as the closet may be made in various shapes, ornamented in various ways, but the invention consists of the construction set forth, and which is applicable to any shape of closet.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a top and a bottom, of side bars or uprights connecting the top and bottom at the rear corners of the closet, rear uprights connecting the top and bottom at the rear corners of the closet, front uprights connecting the top and bottom, and front and rear feet secured to the bottom, the rear feet being recessed to receive the rear bars, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a top and a bottom, of front uprights connecting the top and bottom, said top and bottom having combined straight and dove-tailed mortises, and dovetailed tenons on the ends of said front uprights constructed to enter the straight por-i tions of the mortises, and when moved longitudinally of the mortises, interlock in the dove-tailed portions thereof, side bars or uprights connecting the top and bottom at the rear corners of the closet, rear uprights connecting the top and bottom at the rear cor-;

ners of the closet, and front and rear feet secured to the bottom, the rear feet being recessed to receive the rear bars, substantially as described.
