This invention relates to furniture, and it is an object of the invention to provide an article of furniture which is to be shipped knocked-down direct to the consumer-and wherein the various parts of the article are so constructed as to be readily put together by the consumer without requiring any particular skill. 7
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved furniture whereby certain important advantages are attained and the article rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth.
Thenovel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
. In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the front frame of an article of furniture;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating one of the side panels in applied position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective illustrating the further step in assembling the article of applying the back panel;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the step for applying the top panel;
Figure 5 is a view in front elevation of the completearticle of furniture;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken thru I the assembled article of furniture at the side and top thereof;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 1--1 of Figure 6 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the upper front portion of the assembled furniture.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the article of furniture is what is known as a drawer chest. As the drawers form same are omitted.
In the accompanying drawings, F denotes a front frame which comprises the side members I and the suitably spaced cross members 2. The space between adjacent cross members 2 provides the desired opening through which a drawer is to be inserted. The rear outer corner portion of each of the members I is provided therealong with a rabbet 3 as particularly illustrated in no part of the invention the" drawings. It is believed the accompanying draw.-
Figures 1 and 3 of the to be self-evident from ings that the members I and shipped in knock-down form and can be properly outrequiring any particular skill.
Each of the-sidepanels S is of desired dimensions and suitably secured to the innerside face that the .same
of the panel S are the transverse members 4 suitably spaced apart lengthwise of the panel with the member 4 at the top end of the: panel liavinga fiatfaice flush with the adjacent top edge of thepanel. The remaining members 4 are formed to provide the usual drawer slides which, of course, are positioned'upon the panel S for proper coaction with the'drawer openings of the front frame F. The members 4 ateach end terminate a slight distance inwardly from the adjacent longitudinal margin'of the side panel S for= a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. In the present embodiment of my invention each of the side panels S is rectangular.
Glued or otherwise securely held to the inner face of each of the side panels S are the screw blocks 5 each having afiat face flush with the forward ends of the members 4. Each of these blocks 5 is provided therethrough with an opening 6 substantially at right angles to said flush face of the block and through which a screw 1 is to be inserted as will later be explained.
2 can be readily assembled by the consumer withf' The extension of the front longitudinal maras to be snugly received within the rabbet 3 when the furniture is assembled and the extended portion at the rear longitudinal margin of the side panel S is substantially equal to the thickness of a back panel B.
The top panel T is of such dimensions as desired and is provided in its under surface along its rear margin with a rabbet or dado 8.
The furniture is intended to be shipped knockdown to the consumer accompanied, of course, with the necessary instructions as to the manner of assembling the parts. In such assembly the front frame F is placed face down on the floor or bench and the side panels S with the members 4 applied are placed along the side members l of the front frame F with the forward extended marginal portion of each of the panels engaging within a rabbet 3 and the blocks 5 resting upon the inner face of the adjacent member I. The screws 1 are then inserted through the openings 6 of the blocks 5 and threaded into the member I whereby the side panel S is effectively held to the front frame.
After the side panels S have been applied the back panel B is placed upon the rear and upwardly disposed ends of the members 4 with the upper marginal portion of the panel 13 extending a slight distance above the top cross members 4. The back panel B is then secured to the members 4 by driving nails through the back panel into the adjacent ends of the members 4.
The top: panel T is then laid upon the floor or bench with its under face upwardly disposed. The assembled front frame F, side panels S and back panel B are then upended and placed upon the top panel T with the extended top portion of the back panel B snugly engaging within the dado or rabbet 8 as is partcularly illustrated in Figure 4. Nails are driven through this extended portion of the back panel B into the top panel T and top cross member 4 of each of the side panels S and the topmember 2 of the front frame F are secured to the top panel '1 by screws. The parts as assembled in Figure 4 are then upended as illustrated in Figure 5 and the structure is then ready to receive the drawers.
The lower portions of the members I of the front frame may have secured thereto the bottom depending skirt 9 and the lower portion of each of the side panels S may be cut away, as at ill, or otherwise formed to increase the esthetio value of the assembly.
It is also of advantage to secure to the inner faces of the side panels S below the cross members 4 the reinforcing or strengthening board II.
It is to be stated that if preferred the members 4 in shipment may be separate from the panel S proper as can also the board I I referred to. It is also believed to be obvious that the skirt 9 is separate in shipment.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an article of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention is par-- ticularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my I invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
An: article of furniture comprising a front frame including side members, side panels, cross members carried by the inner face of each of the side panels to contact directly with a side member of the front frame, blocks carried by each of the side panels for direct contact with a side member of the front frame, means for securing said blocks to said side member, a top panel secured to the top cross members of the side panels and to the top of the front frame, the rear outer longitudinal portion of each of the side members of the front frame having a rabbet extending therealong, the adjacent side panel extending beyond the cross members of the side panel to engage within said rabbet, the side panels also extending beyond the rear ends of the cross members, a back panel secured to the rear ends of the cross members and positioned between the rear extended portions of the side panels, said back panel extending upwardly beyond the top of the side panels, the top panel being provided in its under face along its rear margin with a rabbet to receive said upwardly extending portion of the back panel, and means for securing said extended portion of the back panel to the top panel.
LOUIS DONALD FISHER.
