SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,808, dated November 13, 1888.

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS Knsrnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvcment in Buggy-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buggy-bodies, and more particularly to the means for securing the panels in place.
The object of my invention is to provide a buggy-body of asiinple, cheap, strong, and durable construction,thepanels ofwhich may be secured in place Without nails, screws, or pins, and which is adapted to be given a line and substantial [inish of paint and varnish, so that the invention may be used in the construction ofthe finest buggies.
The invention consists in the novel devices and novel combination of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and in which simi lar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a plan View of a buggybody embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, enlarged, of one of the upright posts, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom View showing one corner of the body and its upright post. Fig. 5 is a partial eross-section on lineof Fig. 2, enlarged. Fig. G is a vertical section through one ofthe sills, taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 4.
In said drawings, A A are theside sills, and B B the end sills orframe-pieces, of the body. The side and end sills may be secured together in any suitable manner. The means which I prefer to employ consistin halving the side sill, as shown at a, so that the end of the same will ilt into the rectangular recess b cut in the end of the sill B. The tongue b on the end sill, B, overlaps the end of the side sill, A. The side and end sills thus halved are rigidly secured together by screws a. The side and end sills, A B, are furnished with marginal rims a2 l)2 at their bottom edges, which rims are provided with an angular groove, a3 b3, to receive the panels D. The upright posts C are also furnished with similar angle-grooves,0 c, on each side to receive the ends of the panels. rIhe angle-grooves c c, cut in the side faces of the upright posts, give said posts a doubledovetail shape in cross-section.
The posts C are secured to the sills A B at the corners thereof, being fitted in dcvetail grooves c', cut in said corners through the marginal rims a2 b2, the shape of the grooves c' corresponding to the cross-section ofthe posts C, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4. The Walls of the groove or socket c are formed by the notch a3 cnt in the end of the side sill, A, and by the tongue b on the end sill, B, the end of which tongue is cut on an angle, b", to iit the anglegroove c in the post O. The corners of the side and end sills, A B, above the rims a? b2, are cut at an angle of forty-live degrees to fit the inside face, c, of the posts G. Screws c3 also serve to secure the posts C to the sills A B.
The panels D are furnished with angle edges el at their bottom to fit the angle-grooves dabs, in the side and end sills, and with similar angle ends, d', to lit in the angle-grooves c of the posts C.
The panels D are secured rigidly in place by simply inserting or slipping them down into their proper place in their grooved receptacle a3 b3 c in the sills and posts. Glue, which is indicated at c4, serves to unite the panels firmly with the sills and posts. The outer face of the panels D is flush with the outer face of the posts C and of the marginal rims a2 b of the sills A B. The marginal rims a2 b2 are made integral with the sills A B. The sills, posts, and panels are all of wood, so that the glue will serve to unite the parts rigidly together, and so that the flush faces of the wood posts, panels, and. marginal rims of the sills may be given the usual fine smooth surface and iinish, which is customarily imparted to tine buggybodies by paint and varnish. The coating of paint and varnish is indicated in the drawings by the outer heavy line, f, and is continuous over the surface of the panels, posts, and marginals rims of the sills, and completely conceals all joints.
The dash G is secured to the posts C by the vertical supports g, which extend down to the bottom of the body inside the posts C. The
front posts, C, for this purpose are provided with parallel ledges g', upon which the supports g fit. The supports y are secured by bolts gwhielrextend through the posts (l and the panels D.
By my invention, it will be observed, the panels D maybe alllrmly secured to the body without the use of screws, nails, plugs, or pins, and that three marginal edges of each panel are embraced by the grooves or the sockets in' the posts and sills, thus effeetually prevent ing any warping or loosening of the panels. All danger of the panels splitting at the screw, nail, or pin l1oles is also prevented. lVhere screws have heretofore been employed andthe screw-heads covered up by wooden plugs in the customary manner in order to give a surface for the paint and varnish, great difficulty has been experienced in preventing the plugs from breaking the varnish or bulging ont and showing through the same and thereby marring the fine finish of the buggy-body. This difficulty is entirely overcome by my invention.
Ihereby disclaim,as not of' my invention, the devices shown and described in latents No. 131,688, of September 24, 1872, to Johnson; No. 245,162, of August 2, 1881, to Hallenbeek; and No. 261,829,0f August l, 1882, t0 Calkins.
l claim- 1. 'In abuggy-body, the combination of the end and side sills furnished with grooved niarginal rims at their lower outer edges or corners, with the nprightposts furnished with grooves in their faces to the depth or thickness horizontally of said marginal rims and registering therewith, and panels of a thickness equal to said marginal rims and having their bottom and end edges iitting in the grooves of said sills and posts, the outer sur faces of said sills, posts, and panels being all flush with each other and adapted t0 receive the usual fine smooth buggy-body finish, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with sills A B, provided with marginal rims at L, 'having angle-grooves a" b, of` upright corner-posts C, having angle= grooves c c, and panels D,flnsh with the outer surface of said marginal rims and posts, and having angle bottom and end edges, (l d', glued to said sills and posts, substantially as specified.
The combination, in a buggyloody, with the panel, of' a sill provided with a marginal grooved rim at its lower outer edge equal in thickness to the panel to receive the panel flush With the outer surface of said rim, substantially as specified.

5. In abuggybody, the combination of sills A, having halved ends, with sills B, having recesses b to receive the halved' ends of said sills A, and provided with tongues b', fitting over the ends of said sills A, and grooved er dovetail shaped eorner-posts G, the corners of" said sills A B being cut at an angle and provided with dovetail-shape grooves to receive said posts, substantially as specified.
(i. ln a buggy-body, the combination, with sills A, having halved ends a, of sills B, having rectangular recesses I) and angle-ended tongues b, the corners ofsaid sills A B being eut at an angle and provided with dovetail grooves c, corner-posts C, having angle-grooves c in their faces and fitting in said dovetail grooves c in said sills, said sills A B being provided with anglegrooved marginal rims a2 b, and panels D, having angle bottom and end edges fitting in said grooved rims and posts, substantially as specified.
