Description

(No Model.) v
N. KASTLER. BUGGY BODY.
N0. 4 14.070. Patented Jan; 6, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS KASTLER, OF LA PORTE, INDIANA.
BUGGY-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,070, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed July 12, 1890 Serial No. 358,479- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may conoerm.
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS KASTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in La Porte,in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buggy-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buggy-bodies, and more particularly to improvements upon the buggy-body heretofore patented to me in Letters Patent of the United States No. 392,808, granted November 1 3,1888.
In manufacturing buggy-bodies it is desir-- able and customary to make the box and the frame-work of the body of different woods, the said pieces or panels of the box being usually composed of white Wood, while the sills and posts or frame-pieces are usually made of ash or other hard wood.
In my previouslypatented box-body the exterior surface of the body, which received the paint and varnish finish, was composed in part of two different kinds of wood, as the marginal rim of the sills and the corners of the posts were exposed flush with the sides of the box.
The object of my present. improvement is to so construct my box-body as that the whole exterior surface of the body, which receives the paint and varnish finish, may be of one kind of woodviz., that of the sides of the boxto facilitate giving the whole exterior surface of the box the desired smooth and even finish. This result I accomplish, and herein myinvent-ion consists, by providing the sides or panels of the box with marginal flanges, which project down over and cover the sills and posts.
Another feature of my improvement consists in providing the panels of the box at their bottom edges, near the ends thereof, with dovetail tenons, which fit in corresponding grooves or mortises of the frame-work, so as to hold these projecting flanges on the sides of the box from curling or warping away from the sills, especially at the extreme ends of such sides or at the corners of the box.
My present improvement further consists in the novel devices and novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a plan View of a bngg -body embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of one of the corners. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of one of the corners. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through one of the corners. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 6 6 otFig. 3. Fig.7 is a detail view showing the end and side sills fitted together at the corner, and Fig. 8 is a detail end view of one of the sills.
In the drawings, A A are the side sills, B B the end sills, and O the vertical posts, constituting the frame-work of the body. The side and end sills A B are halved together at the corner of the box, the half portions of each being indicated at a b. The corner-post O is of triangular shape and is halved or notched at c to fit the truncated corner a of the side sill A. The inner face of the triangular post 0 fits against the truncated corner I) of the end sill B. The side sills A and the end sills B are provided with marginal rims (L b having grooves a b to receive the lower edges d of the panels or side pieces D of the body. The panels D also have flanges d projecting down over the marginal rims of the sills. The corner-post C is likewise furnished with grooves o c in its side faces to receive the projecting edges d d of the panels D, and the panels D have projecting flanges d overlapping and covering the exterior of the post 0, the panels being mitered together at the corners. To prevent any tendency of the projecting flanges (Z and d from warping or turning away from the sills and posts, I further provide the panels with dovetail tenons 01' (Z at'their lower edges near the ends of the panels, which fit in the corresponding dovetail mortises formed in or between the post C and side sill A by notching or cutting away the marginal rims at to a". The sills A B are secured at the corner by screws E, and the posts, sills, and panels are all secured firmly together by gluing in the usual manner. The dash F is secured to upright posts or bars f, which fit in suitable mortises or sockets formed between the post 0 and the sills. A
bolt f extends through the flange c -on the post and through the panel D to secure the bar f in place. The ribs G, which support the seat, are secured in place by gluing and by screws g inserted through the posts from the inside, and which do not extend through the panels, so that the outer surface of the panels may be left smooth and intact to receive the usual varnish finish. The upper surface of the sills A B is slightly beveled inward, as indicated in Fig. 6, so as to serve as the usual water-shed strip heretofore customarily provided at the inner corners on top of the sills.
I claim 1. In a buggy-body, the combination of the end and side sills furnished with continuous grooved marginal rims at and extending along their lower outer edges or corners with the upright posts furnished with grooves in their outer faces, with panels having their end and lower side edges fitting in said grooved posts and sills and held in place by said grooved marginal rims, said panels being provided with flanges overlapping said posts and sills, whereby said panels may be secured in place to said posts and sills without the use of nails or screws and at the same time the whole exterior surface of the body may be made of one kind of wood and thus be better adapted to receive a smooth and even finish, substantially as specified.
2. In a buggy-body, the combination of the end and side sills furnished with continuous grooved marginal rims at and extending along their lower outer edges or corners with the upright posts furnished with grooves in their outer faces, with panels having their end and lower side edges fitting in said grooved posts and sills and held in place by said grooved marginal rims, said panels being provided with flanges overlapping said posts and sills, whereby said panels may be secured in place to said posts and sills withoutthe use oi nails or screws and at the same time the whole exterior surface of the body may be made of one kind of wood and thus be better adapted to receive a smooth and even finish, said panels having dovetail tenons near their ends at their lower edges fitting in corresponding mortises in said sills and posts, substantially as specified.
3. In abuggy-body, the combination of sills A B, halved together at a I) and having truncated corners a 1), posts (1, having halved or notched ends 0 fitting the corners of said sills, the shoulder of said halved end of said post resting upon one of said sills, and panels D, said sills A13 and post (I having angle-grooves a b c to receive the edges of said panels D, and said panels D being provided with overlapping fianges (l d, substantially as specified.
4. In a buggy-body, the combination ofsills A ll, halved together at a I) and having truncated corners a 1), posts 0, having halved or notched ends 0 fitting the corners of said sills, and panels D, said sills A B and post 0 having angle-grooves a" b c to receive the edges oi said panels D, and said panels D being provided with overlapping flanges d (7 and said panels D having dovetail tenons (Z fitting in corresponding grooves formed in or between said posts and sills, substantially as specified.
5. In a buggy-body, the combination of the side and end sills A B, halved together and having truncated corners a 7), and the post C, having the halved lower end fitting the truncated corners of said sills and panels D, the shoulders at the halved end of said postresting upon one of said sills, substantially as specified.
NICHOLAS KAS'lLER.
