WAIST-SHAPING MEANS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARY JANE HENNESSY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Kensington, county of Westmoreland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVaist- Shaping Means, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to waistshaping means, and especially to a belt-buckle for use in connection with a corset or a steel attached to such corset for producing the wellknown long-waist effect, the main object of the invention being to provide means for securing a leather, canvas, or other buckle-belt to the corset or to a separate steel or other member adapted to form the long waist.

The long-waist effect has been produced heretofore by means of a long-waisted corset and also by means of a'separate long-waistforming steel attachable to the corset and having a tape adapted to be wrapped around the body of the wearer and then have the waist of the dress tucked under such tape; but with these long-waist-forming devices it has been necessary to Wear a soft-ribbon belt which can be tucked under the tape, and it has not been possible to wear with such waistshaping means a stiff belt havinga buckle, and it ismy object to provide for the wearing of such a belt.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an illustrative View showing one mode of producing a longwaist effect. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a stiff belt having a buckle and secured to a waist-shaping device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view illustrating in detail a stifi belt having a buckle provided with means for attachment to a long-waist-forming device. Fig. at is a transverse section of a belt-buckle having a socket with a waist-shaping steel therein.

In producing the longwaist effect with waist-shaping means separate from the corset it has been customary to make use of a somewhat short steel, such as 2, having one or more eyelet-holes 3, adapted to be hooked overa corresponding clasp or clasps of a corset 4. At the lower end thereof this steel 2 usually has secured thereto a long tape or string 5, adapted to be'p'assed two or more times around the body of the wearer and preferably tied in front to assist in holding the steel in proper position, the tape being usually inserted through slots 6 6 at the lower end of the steel. With this steel the edges 7 of the wearers dress-waist are tucked under the oblique portions 5' of the tape to produce the long-waist effect and a ribbon belt tucked in place in substantially the same manner.

My present=improvements are designed to permit the use of a stiff belt having a buckle when it is desired to wear such a belt with a long-waist-shaping device, and I accomplish this result by providing means for attaching the belt-buckle directly to the lower end or pointof the long-waist-forming means whether the latter be a corset or a separate long-waist-forming steel, such as that shown at 2.

B designates a belt, andb a belt-buckle, of any suitable construction, except that the latter has connecting means for attachment to the steel 2, said buckle having in this case a recess or socket at the rear side thereof and near the lower edge of the buckle, said recess being of such size and shape and being so losta'nt tendency to work up at the front of the waist and the steel a corresponding tendency to press the belt and the buckle down. The recess or socket 8 may be formed advantageously by brazing or soldering a substantially trough-shaped or U-shaped piece of sheet metal 9 to the back of the buckle, the inner rear wall 10 being preferably inclined 11pwardly and to the rear to accommodate itself more readilyto the positions and movements of the steel 2, wedged in place between it and the rear wall of the buckle.

It will be evident that the'devices herein described constitute a very simple and effective means for producing the long-waist effect thereof a recess open at its upper side and adapted to receive the end of a waist-shaping device, the inner rear wall of said recess being inclined to the rear.

2. A belt-buckle having at the lower edge of its rear side a recess open at its upper side and adapted to receive the end of a waistshaping device.

3. A belt-buckle having at the rear side thereof a rearWardly-projecting member forming between it and the buckle a socket adapted to receive the end of a waist-shaping device.

4. A belt having a buckle provided with a socket adapted to receive the end of a waistshaping device.

5. The combination with a Waist-shaping steel constructed for attachment to a corset, of a belt having a buckle provided atits rear side with a steel-receiving socket.

6. The combination with a waist-shaping steel constructed for attachment to a corset, of a tape adapted to be secured to said steel and passed around the body of the wearer, and a belt having a buckle provided at its rear side with a steel-receiving socket.
