TO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY OONOERN:

Be it known that we, THOMAS Il. ESTEP and WILLIAM C. IIEFFERMAN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coilins; and do hereby declare the following to be :L full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making pui-t of this specification.

Our invention consists in e cheap, simple, and secure device for hcrmetieally closing the `joint where :t eofinlid joins the body, thus preventing the escape of offensive :ind contagious odors from the` corpse. In the aecomponying drnwingsi v AFigure l is :L transverse vertical section of' :t coin embodying our improvements, the lid being detached ,from the body.

A represents the body of the oolin, and the upper edges of thc side and end boards which constitute this body :tre provided lwith a number of convex corrugations, a, which extend completely :Lronnd the collie. The lid I3 has :L groove, I), sunk in its under side, and said groove is adopted, when the lid is in position, to fit over the upper corrugated edges of the body. Secured to the under side of the lid, so that their front sides would be flush with the inner edges of the groove b, are cleo-ts O, whose bottom portions have attached to them, by mouldings D, one edge of :in Indio-rubber gasket, E, and the other edge of this gasket is secured between the moulding F .and the bottom of the lid I3. The rubber is drowntight between these two mouldings, :1s shown in tig. I, ond both sides of the gasket which come in contact with any portion of' the lid should be covered with white lend er other suitable cement.. When the lid is screwed down on the body of the coiiin, this gasket is pressed tightlyaguinst the top ond inner sides of the body, ond thus forms :L perfectly oir-tight joint, through which no ges or odor can escape.

This mode of' rendering a.- col'in air-tight is very simple und ell`ective, ond will always be reliable, no metter how much the Collin sides should warp or spring. i

We claim herein as new, and of our invcntion v A coln, whose upper edges of thc body A are provided with corrugntions a, when used in connection with grooved lid I3 b, cleat C, und India-rubber gasket E, the whole being arranged and operating substantially es herein described und slet forth.
