TO ALL WHOM 1r MAY cononnn;
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. DEVOE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have, invented. a new and useful Improvement in Cans and Boxes for Paints and other Materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a camconstructed according to my invention.
Figure 2, a detached section of a portion of the same on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a similar detached section, showing a modification of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in a novel mode of securing the cover of a sheet-metal can or box designed for holding paint or other materials to the body thereof, whereby an airtight or very close joint is formed between the said cover and body without the use of solder.
To enable others to understand 'the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A indicates the body of the can or box, which is made of tin or other shectmetal, and preferably of cylindrical form. This body A is furnished, at a suitable distance from its top or upper edge, with an annular or circumferentialinternal swage, the outer side of which constitutes a groove, (1, and situated immediately below this groove is an external swag'e which forms a circumferential rib, b, the relative positions of the groove a and rib 6 being somewhat more plainly shown in the enlarged view, fig. 2. Placed around the aforesaid body of the can or box, with the upper portion situated within the groove a, and its lower portion resting upon the upper side of the rib Z1, is a ring or gasken'c, of India rubber or other like material, the said gasket being thus laid in such position that when the cover B is placed upon and around the upper part, a, of the body A, and pressed downward thc lower edge of'the rim [1* will be brought snugly and squarely down upon the gasket e, and compress the same upon the aforesaid rib, so that the said cover being securely retained in place by the friction of its rim [1* upon the upper portion just mentioned, of the body A, a very close, and in fact a nearly air-tightjoint is formed between the cover and the body of the can orbox, such can or box being thus extremely well adapted for holding either dry or moist materials which it is desired to keep wholly enclosed. In themodification shown in fig. 3, a round instead of flat gasket is employed, the some being situated wholly within the groove (1, with the rim 6* of the cover, extending quite past the same, with its lower edge resting directly upon the rib I), the joint being (losed by the gasket, compressed in this instance between the rim 6* and the bot-tom of the groove (1.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by LcttcrsPatent, is-
The groove (t, external rib Ii, and gasket 1:, arranged in relation with each other and with the upper part (2* of the body A, and the rim 71* of the cover, substantially as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
' FRED. W. DEVOE.
