Letters Patent No, 85,932, dated Tamm/.ry 19, 1869. i
rMPRovED rRUT-JAR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part pf the same.
To all whom fit ma/y'conccrn Be it known that I, P. M. HINMAN, of Rochester,
. in the countyof Monroe, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement. in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.v
Figure 1 is an elevation of the top of my improved `yar.'
Figure 2, `a vertical section of the same.
Figure 3, a diagram, showing thearrangementof the slot and groove foradmitting air to the jar.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts My invention consists in combining with twoanges, having an intermediate packing' between, a side slot through the outer ange, and a vertical groove in the inner one, by which means the air is readily let into the jar, to open it, by the use of a suitable instrument.
In the drawings- A indicates the top of the jar, and
B, the cover.
The jar is formed with two vertical flanges, ava', the inner one projecting above the top of the outer one, as shown.
Between these flanges fitsthe pacln'ngering b, being compressed iirmly in place.
The cover has simply a single flange, d, which shuts down, between anges a a', upon the packing-ring b, being guided in place by.' the inner flange, over which it shuts, s o that it cannot fail to rest, at all times, .upon the packing.
At a suitable position, a slot, c, is` madethrough the side of the outer ange, on aline with the pack ing, so that a pointed instrument may be easily inserted under the packing.
Inside the packing, also, a vertical groove, f, is formed in the side of the inner flange, so that, as the packing is raised by the instrument, the air will be allowed to pass around and upward, and thus fill the jar in opening.
The great advantage I claim in this arrangement is the combination ofthe side slot and vertical groove with the double iianges'.
The. packing-ring is made to pack closely between the flanges, so as to be retained in place against expansion; hence there is no other practicable way of admitting the air than this.
The elevation of the inner flange, a, above the outer iiange, a', enables the rubber ring to be easily slipped so that it cannot be misplaced, but must always strike and rest on the rubber, which is perfectly enclosed, and shielded from the fruit, and from the atmosphere.
The-slot allows the point to be easily inserted, and the vertical groove, extending to the' top of the inner flange, allows the air to pass inward, and around the packing, to whatever height it maybe raised. Were "itnot for this groove, the `packing-ling, being vclosely compressed in place, would bind so closely to the flange as to effectually stop the passage of air.
I am aware that various plans have been adopted for allowing ingress of air, but none, so far as l am aware, embodying the use of the horizontal slot and vertical groove, as in myrcase.
The opposite sides of the jar-neck are provided with lugs or catches, g g, over which hooks an elastic band, 0,. passing simply over the centre of the cover, and thereby retaining it in place, as clearly shown.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the horizontal slot c and vertical groove' f with the two anges a c and enclosed packing-ring b, the whole arranged as described, and operating in the manner and for the purpose speciiied.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
