Description

(Modem J. 0. 0. CARLTON. JAR COVER FASTBNER.
Patented Jilly 25, 1882 Z7 M m ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. O. CARLTON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MCBRIDE & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
JAR-COVER FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,808, dated July 25, 1882. Application filed January 7, 1882. (ModeL) 1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. O. CARLTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the countyot' Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover and bracket.
This invention has relation to jar-cover fasteners; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangemeutof parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates thejar, having a flange, B, around itsrnouth portion 0, and an upwardly-projecting annular lip, d, around the inner margin of.
its mouth. 7
E represents the cover, having a central stopper portion, F, which is designed to fit within the mouth of the jar. Around the central stopper portion is an annular channel, 9, which is made of sufficient breadth to take in the rim projection or lip d ot'the mouth of the jar and the annular rubber packing h, which is seated on the flange of the jar around said lip. The outer rim-wall, k, of the cover-channel'g is not so deep as the stopper portion F,
is placed across the cover. The central por- 45 tion of the bracket is pivoted to a camlever, P, which is seated in a bearing, a, on the top of the cover. The cam is formed with circu lar inclined bearings 2, which engage with the bracket on each side of its pivoted center, and force it upward on its pivot-stem 21, thereby drawing the cover tightly down on the pack ing-ring, and finally closing the rim-wall is against the flange of thejar.
Havingdescribed thisinvention,whatlclaim, 55
and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- The combination, with the flange-mouth jar A and the annularly-ehanneled cover having the bearing a in its top, of the double-hook bracket L and the lever-cam P, having thein- 6o clined bearings z and the stem 2), to which the bracket is pivoted, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN C. G. CARLTON.
