The thickened members 3 ol' the rib shown in Fig. 2 have abrupt ends, but they may, in some cases, be provided with inclined portions 14 leading to the notches, as shown, vl'or instance, by dotted lines in Fig. 7, the engagement oi the fingers 6 of the retainer with these inclined portions serving to cause the depression of said retainer as the latter. is turned a'l'ter being applied to the jar.
A closure constructed iii accordance with my invention can be cheaply made, it provides a neat and attractive finish for the top of the jar, and, `when the retainer is in the l'orni oll a closed cap, it serves to protect the cover, or cover and spring, from injury or displacement. A jar having, around the-mouth,a rib with notches in its underside whiehnotches have abrupt side walls, a cover for said jar, a retainer extending over said cover and having inwardly extending iingers for entering said notches, and also having an elastic member extending downwardl from the retainer and having only a limited bearing upon the cover, said elastic member of the retainer exerting downward pressure upon said cover and upward pressure upon said fingers.

A jar having, around the mouth, a rib with notches in the underside of the saine, which notches have abrupt side walls a cover for said jar, a retainer having fingers for entering said notches, and also having an elastic member secured to the underside of 'said retainer, said elastic member exerting downward pressure upon said cover and upward pressure upon said in ers.
