ALEXANDER'T. COX, OF SCRANTON, IOWA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFEGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,951, dated February 25, 1902.
Application filed May 13, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALEXANDER T. COX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chimney-caps; and one object of my invention is the provision of a cap which is capable of adjustment to chimneys of various sizes and which can be quickly and easily applied and which will not become detached.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an adjustable chimney-cap which will firmly secure the cap in position and which will also act to bind or retain the bricks of the chimney, and thus preserve the chimney.
Another obj ect of myinvention is the provision of a chimney-cap which will perform its functions in a thorough and practical manner and which will loe of extremely simple, inexpensive, and durable construction.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of a chimney-cap embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a perspective view .of my cap applied to a chimney. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view through two of the corners to show the peculiar construction of the adjusting devices. Fig. 3 represents a detail View of one of the adjusting-clamps.
In the drawings, A designates a chimney of the usual and Wellfknown construction, upon the top of which rests vmy cap or cover B, which comprises a flat cast plate formed with an opening C to allow the passage of the stovepipe when the pipe extends above the chimney, and around the opening is a collar D,
serai No; 59,965. (No man.)
upon which is adaptedto fit the cap E when the chimney is out of use. Upon each corner of the plate are formed the raised guides or cleats F, in which t the slotted clamping de; vices Gr, which are composed of a slotted arm having a foot H, which engages the corners of \the chimney and firmly holds the cover inposition and binds the bricks of the chimney; The slotted arm can be adjusted in the guides and retained at any desired adjustment by means of the nut-and-screw device J, as will be understood.
My capis preferably made of cast metahand the manner of applying it is obvious from the drawings and description, and it will be seen that my device fills all the requirements of a chimney-cap in a perfect manner and that the cap is entirely practical.
1. A chimney-cap comprising a flat plate with cleats at the corners, and clamping devices adapted to engage the corners of a chimL ney and means for adjustably holding said clamping devices in said cleats, as set forth.
2. 'I he combination of a chimneycap com,L prising a flat plate with opening and collar about said opening and raised cleats at the corners, with slotted clamping devices adapt ed to embrace and engage the corners of a' chimney and adjustable in said cleats, nuts in the slots of the clamping devices and bolts engaged in said nuts and held in the cleats,- all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
ALEXANDER T. COX.
