JOHN L. BARTELS, 0F FOREST CI'IY, ILLINOIS.
STOVEPIPE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed March 6, 1909. Serial No. 481,608.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. BAnTnLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest City, in the county of Mason, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stove pipe fasteners and its object is to provide an extremely simple and cheap form of stove pipe fastener which will hold two sections of pipe together and which at the same time will prevent sagging of the joint or lateral swaying thereof.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings like charactersof reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of two sections of stove pipe equipped with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
It is a well understood fact that in many buildings such as school houses in rural districts stove pipes are frequently carried long distances through the room and that these pipes are braced ordinarily by guy wires attached to the pipes at frequent intervals to prevent sagging and lateral swaying. The present invention eliminates these guy wires by the following construction.
The numeral 10 indicates one section of a stove pipe and the numeral 11 another section. Around each section of the stove pipe extends a pair of arcuate members 12 which are connected by means of an off set portion 13 and which are provided with upstanding apertured ears 14. The off set portion is rectangular in form with sharp corners. The ears are connected by means of a thumb screw 15 provided with a finger grip 16. At 17 is a bar having downwardly turned ends 18 and this bar is of such size as to closely engage between the sides of the respective oif set portions and between the bight of said off set portions and the stove pipe sections. The clamps are arranged with the 03 set portions downward so that the bar lies directly beneath the axis of the stove p The device is applied to the stove pipe sections in such manner that the downwardly turned ends 18 of the bar bear against the edges of the respective bight portions of the clamps so that the bar is firmly held by the clamps and cannot move laterally to change its angle with respect to said clamps. When so applied the bar will hold the pipe sections together while at the same time its position beneath said sections will prevent sagging of the pipe and its arrangement with the sides of the OE set portions will prevent any change in the parallelism of said clamps and will consequently prevent lateral swaying or deflection of the pipe joint.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
The combination with a pair of connected stove pipe sections; of circumscribing clamps each detachably connected to one of said stove pipe sections and each provided with a rectangular oif set portion lying beneath the respective stove pipe section, and a bar having a rectangular cross section closely fitting the off set portions of the clamps whereby lateral deflection of the joint is prevented, said bar having downwardly turned extremities engaging respective edges of the respective off set portion whereby the pipe sections are prevented from separating and the joint between said sections is prevented from sagging.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. BARTELS. Witnesses:
F. D. RANKIN, S. J. MARSHALL.
